Of 10 major camera manufacturing companies, a total of 71 P&S cameras has been announced at PMA2007. Nikon have released 8.

It would appear that money from the masses is more important than serious camera design

I was actually considering a P&S for those times you can't have your DSLR in your pocket.. I don't have big pockets.

Nikon has turned itself into a consumer product manufacturer in terms of cameras?? hmm.... is this their idea of saying "discontinuing film cameras, concentrate on digitals" ?? I hope not!

Well there is nothing wrong with using a P&S. When you are out on the town you are not going to be taking your DSLR with you and not everyone can or wants to spend so much $$$ on a camera.

Maybe we should introduce Nikon to the idea of halo models?

Well pointed out Chris

My main concern is that Nikon can produce and release 8 P&S in one hit - why on earth would any company need to produce 8 new models one time  Surely 2 or maybe 3 but 8!!!!!

1 or 2 is aimed at the male market, the rest are on the female markets...

STOP PRESS - the date is 1984 and Nikon are pleased to announce the launch of the FM2n - a wonderful addition to the Nikon range of film cameras.

Now we go to the year 2007 - Nikon are pleased to announce the release of the FM2n - but hold your horses - they have also announced the FM2o, FM2p, FM2q, FM2r, FM2s, FM2t and finally the FM2w

The world of commerce has gone bonkers

You have to wonder why these marketing gurus get paid such big whacks of moolah:

Lethal Weapon 1
Lethal Weapon 2
Lethal Weapon 3

Superman 1
Superman 2
Superman 3

Spiderman
Spiderman 2

Rocky 1 - Rocky 936 etc etc

You get the picture (groan!)

But you forget the little letter at the end is important in today's consumer marketplace...

n = normal version (for the everyday punter)
o = outstanding version (for those that just have to have a little more)
p = portrait version (for taking portraits)
q = quiet version (for those sneaky shots)
r = racy (or is that ricey) version (for sports nuts)
s = sassy version (for the woman that needs more)
t = telephoto version (so you can zoom in)
w = wide-angle version (just so you get so much more in the picture)

Sorry had to do it, but it is pretty much the way things are heading with the general consumer space. If you can put out one good thing, surely 8 good things are better, after all some nutter will buy all 8 of them!

Eight P&S are nothing.

Do you realise you can buy about 20 different varieties of white bread in the supermarket.  Plus the stuff the supermarket bakery cooks on the premises. The breads all have different brand names but are from only two major suppliers.

Yep... it's all about the marketing... most companies have learnt that if you provide a multitude of apparent choice i.e. same product, different packaging etc you get significantly greater sales for a modest increase in cost outlay. Nikon has just taken a little longer than some others to head this way, but sure enough their now 'in the know' isn't modern consumerism grand !!!

I wonder what the ratio of P&S to SLR was back in the film days?

Recently, I have read a thread where the author was asking for a compact camera.
In a compact camera, many participants ignored the size of the sensor, quality of glass,
The availability of optical viewfinder, aperture/shutter priority etc. Some acknowledged that quality of the glass is very important and aperture priority is very much desired.
But everybody wanted a compact, slim, cool-looking camera that you can point, shoot and get a great picture during the day and in low light.

Now, go figure what compact cameras should manufacturers design. :)
