I'd hate to think of the price tag on the Sigma, and does as the 50-500 is a Bigma, is this one a FBigma or FnBigma maybe ?

Any example shot from it floating around ?

But it comes with a *free* teleconverter! What a bargain! I'd buy one just for that

I fear both the price and weight, but I do hope it's good enough to put some serious pressure on Canon to give us a decent longer zoom. Ideally not a 200-500/2.8, because from Canon such a thing would need a small truck to carry the purchase price in and the lens out... but the 100-400/4 IS L rumour is sounding more necessary by the day.

Jesus Christ!

How big is that Sigma!!!!

Imagine either the tripod or monopod you'd need!!!

I still want one though!

Considering the Tamron 200-500mm costs approx US$800 I would price the Sigma from US$6,000 and up

Come on, at f/2.8 I imagine I'd be using it handheld.

Imagine there's no shaky hands
it's easy if you try
no pod below us, above us only sky...
(with apologies to JL, of course)

Got any links to those rumours? I've been toying with the idea of buying the current 100-400 dust magnet, but might hold out for a bit if this is going to be reality

http://www.inygb.com/search?q=canon+100 ... IS+L+rumor

Just remember that it's going to be one of their "big series" L lenses, with a 100mm+ front element, so it'll be closer to $10k than $1k.

I seem to recall rumours of a Canon 200-500/2.8 DO lens back when the 400/4 DO was introduced, but they died away. At least that would be lighter than this beastie (although not cheaper!).

Moz, that Google search didn't turn up any commentary about x-400/4 rumours... I'm familiar with the story as I've been saying in public that I want one for several years now, but it might be interesting to see any recent rumour developments...

The Sigma 300-800 f/5.6 is already a MONSTER lens...

Now a 200-500 at F2.8

You can now have the 120-300 f/2.8 and 200-500 f/2.8 all together in one bag....

Doing some basic maths, 500/2.8 = ~179mm of front element opening

Not necessarily, the 120-300/2.8 only has a front element 105mm across. So in "Sigma millimetres" it might only be 170mm or so on the front.
