x250 with D2x

In shutter or manual modes, what is x250 about? Can't test because I just sent away my D2x with a friend to go to Maxwells tomorrow. Seems like quite a few of us have business there tomorrow...

Is it referred to this:

" Nikon's motor drive specifications are made with the camera set to manual exposure, manual focus, and a shutter speed of 1/250 second or faster. If you're using automatic exposure modes, slow shutter speeds, or ligh is to dim for optimal autofocus, you may experience frame rates lower than Nikon specifies"

Thanks Birdie. I'm not sure if I am clear enough though, or maybe I don't understand... You can actually select 'x250' if you go beyond 30" with the dial on manual and shutter modes.

Makes sense, but why not just select 250? That way you can drop it to 200 or anything below without having to scroll through all of the others...

I'd have to read the instructions more carefully in order to correctly answer that for you.

Sorry for the grave dig but I just got a remote release for my D200 today and while scrolling to bulb accidently went past and found the x250 setting mentioned above. It's not mentioned in the manual at all so I was wondering if anyone has had any thoughts since this thread was originally posted?

This is called the "Flash X-Sync" -- it will sync your shutter mechanism to the fastest flash sync possible without creating a shadow on the image. This is used when using the camera with non-FP compatible flashes, such as slave flashes and/or external strobes/studio flashes. This value can be changed to slower via the menu option in "flash sync" and maximum for D200 is 1/250, and AUTO-FP is only compatible with Nikon flashes only I believe.

I still don't get how this is different to setting the normal shutter speed of 1/250 or whatever (which is what I've bee doing). Is it just some foolproof way of ensuring you never go too high?

If you're talking about the setting of 1/250 with an asterisk next to it (in the settings, you get 1/250, and another 1/250*)
The 1/250* is for FP flash sync mode for flashes that are compatible with FP flash sync mode. Allows you to sync at speeds faster than 1/250.

I am guessing that the X250 is just another way of selecting that sync speed whilst the menu may still be set at something else.
