I have the opportunity to buy an AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D lens. It is second hand but in very good condition and the price is good.

I am in the market for a macro lens and whilst at 60mm it is a little shorter than I would have liked, it appears to be too good an opportunity to miss.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens?

Yes - used one for a few years and can highly recommend it - use it as a stepping stone to a longer focal length down the track

Chris what are the main drawbacks with the lens?

Remember, good glass will retain its value over time. If the price is right, you should be able to sell it later for a good price

There are no major drawbacks. It will do 1:1 macro and with a reversing ring can give you even greater magnification. The only major difference between the different focal lengths is that the shorter the focal lenfth the closer you have to be to the subject to get 1:1. It also makes for a very nice standard lens as well.

BTW, is this the same lens that Birddog has listed in the bargain section for $535?

The 60mm macro lens is an excellent lens. It can be used for portraits...and for general purpose photography, and is outstanding for macro shots. It excells at photographing small objects such as stamps, coins etc. Highly recommended. It is sharp as a tack.
