Well its time to buy a wide lens,it is narrowed down to the Tokina 12-24 or the Sigma 10-20.
There are so many reviews on these lens and I had almost decided on the Tokina, then Gary a confirmed anti Sigma person just purchased one and suddenly I'm thinking that the Sigma must be very good.
I need guidance from you guys.

Yes, very angry with them to say the least. I've seen some low acts since I've been in the job, but that took the cake!

I'll keep an eye on this thread as well. For identical money I can't decide either - I'd also pretty much decided on the Tokina as for my use 12mm would be wide enough, but on occassions the 24mm might be handier than the 20mm...same front element (filter) size, but the Tokina is marginally larger.

Optically both seem nice.....

I'm also very interested in this. As you said there are a lot of reviews/comparisons of these lenses out there and it's hard to pick a definite winner.

I think at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either of them.

Went through the same torture about 12 months ago. Decided on the Sigma. That extra 2 mm was just too tempting. I'm happy with it. Though I'm sure I would have been happy with the tokina as well.

Thanks shakey, from the reviews there seems little difference between them which tends to make decisions difficult. I thats why input from actual users is informative.

Thus far I am very impressed with Sigma 10-20. It feels very much at home on the D200, and its build quality is way above anything I've seen previously from Sigma. There's the first checkpoint.

I was using it last night at the Empire, and I'm still very much in a learning mode on the D200 - I'm not yet satisfied with the out of camera colours that I'm seeing (but I've only made about 300 exposures thus far) - but in chimping some of the images, the apparant sharpness that I'm seeing in some of the images is quite impressive. I'm suspecting close to those on the 80-400, and way better than I dared to hope for a lens in this price range.

I'm also using a new, superslim 77mm UV filter that Poon dropped into the box for me. That seems to be serving me no ill effects whatsoever.

I'm hoping to get to post a couple of last night's images later this evening, and if I can see what I thought I saw while chimping, I'll include a full crop for y'all.

The Nikkor zoom goes to 12mm, they also have the 10.5 fisheye, but that's a different .... kettle of fish.

I have the Tokina, lovely lens, built like a tank. I haven't found an occasion yet that I missed the extra 2mm wide.

On the Tokina, if you want a UV or CPL filter, you will need a slim line version otherwise you do get vignetting at 12mm. Not sure on the Sigma.

As mentioned above, it doesn't look like you can go wrong with either.

I use a normal 'thick' Hoya 77mm CPL on top of the Sigma, doesn't seem to cause vignetting but at extreme wide angle it does show up with the uneven exposure through the frame... Nothing much you can do with this extreme wide angle with a CPL on top...

Some samples taken with this len on CPL, midday sun and maximum polarizing effects seen. Some has bit of uneven exposure through the sky, but it does seem good for a lens this wide.
