Hey guys
Started shopping for equipment and public liability insurance today, as I need liability cover for some motorsport events, most notabley Dutton Rally...
First stop was AON, naturally... $10250 equipment cover and 10mil pub. liability cover gave me a premium of $890/year... feels expensive to me...
Anyone else have combined equipment and public liability insurance with aon or other insurers???
Guidance most welcome!
Cheers ears

Sorry my AON quotes are at home. But I know for three of us with about $27000 worth of equipment it was $900 P/A and I cannot remember the PLI costing.
I was told by a PLI consultant that you can shop around for the PLI as most insurers would fall over themselves due to the extremely low risk for PLI in our profession...
Cheers

Liabilitty cover is, by its very nature, quite expensive.
I don't think that this is too bad. Do you have break-up between thecosts of the different types of cover?

Hi Kyle,
Why AUD$10M PL cover? In my day job working in a hazardous environment we have AUD$10M cover and AUD$20M specifically for a LPG contract. I would have thought AUD$1M would have been sufficient. Try a quote on $AUD 1M. Did the event organiser state the PL amount as a matter of interest?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
some companies won't even let you on site as a sub-contractor if you don't have at least $5M PLI and that's in an IT admin job but that applied to all sub-contractors, regardless of trade.
Kyle, that doesn't actually sound all that expensive but certainly shop around.
Let us know what you end up finding.
Cheers,
André

Yes André is right, some of the companies are requiring a minimum of $10 Million for Motorsports events, some have gone as far as to require $20 Million!
$5 Million just doesn't cover anything these days.

Hi,
I'm surprised $1M is not sufficient. I've been in various business for over 20 yaers now in manufacturing and contracting and $10M seems to be where it is at today and the occasional $20M.
Now I am no insurance experpert so ask your broker but their are various PL policies such as is it $10M per incident or just $10M total?
I guess the insurance on $10K of gear would be about $400 per year so $400 plus ish for $10M PL seems fair.

Thanks for the replies guys
I figured the PL insurance was the most expensive, I asked vesna for the price if i left the $4500 laptop off and it dropped $50...
Some event organizers specify min. 10mil PL cover, otherwise i'd have gone for 5mil.
I'll do some shopping round tonight, but i think i'll go with aon, as this seem to be specifically suited to photographers, and quite a few others use them with no hassles

I just got a quote from Suncorp...
Scary monster is about all I can say about it.
$2401.07 for $22,000 worth or equipment, located over 3 different locations and $10 Million PLI. That jumped by $300 to go to $20 Million...
I don't think you'll do much better than AON.

who are AON kyle?
the figure doesnt sound to bad really, im paying about $500 per year just for insurance at a value of about 12k so for an extra $400 to cover PL as well seems quite good.

No public liability though todd?
michael, aon risk services. Very popular.
Decided that it's not worth my cost, $400 odd for public liability for one event, So i'll sort something else out or just not do the event!

Just a side note, I've had accreditation from Superbikes, V8 Supercars, Australian Hill Climb and many more, and have NEVER even been asked about public liability insurance....
Not to say it's not worth it when the sh!t hits the fan, but......

The liability cover is $400 of that premium from aon...
A lot of coin just to shoot one event

Has anyone managed to get a response to email from AON? I've tried twice and they have not replied.
But on their site I can only see "home and contents" that seems applicable - what policy are you guys using for just camera gear? ... search in this site gave me
photographers insurance

Hrmmm .. This thread has come at just the right time.
Does anyone know of an insurance that covers photographic equipment all the time.
Also, is AON reliable and are the any other companies out there that offer a similar thing?
Sorry for the hijack, just thought it would be better than starting my own thread.
Ollie.

Is the cameraman's policy at AON designed for photography businesses?
How would they be for private camera gear use? Say $6K worth of gear (Ouch... hurts when it add it all up.
). No PL cover.
The reason I ask is my recent claim on our home contents policy has resulted is a partial loss of our 'no claim bonus'. Which in effect will negate the benefits of making a claim. If I had a seperate policy for camera gear it would not have been a problem.

I have a policy with CGU covering about $20k worth of gear at the moment and it cost about $1500 a year, but it covers pretty much everything even down to camera failure as a result of normal use, so basically an extended warranty. It also covers theft even if I leave my gear in an unsecured place. It's only $5m of public liability but that hasn't seemed to have been a problem.
It is expensive but the peace of mind it gives you is worth it in my opinion.
