Well I inquired about insuring my gear. Approx $4300.
They got back to me with $400/year.
Seems a bit expensive considering it only cost me $800/year to insure my car VW 2002 Golf and I use that everyday

It's easier to walk off with $4300 worth of Camera equipment compared to a 2002 VW Golf...

That is very expensive, unless you do not have Home Contents Insurance.
For example: I am insured through CGU with Home Contents, and the following applies to goods:
Under $1250 - covered by Home Contents Policy.
Over $1250 - specified item on Home Contents Policy and works out to be approximately 3% of value declared.
Covered anywhere in Australia, and I think it also includes New Zealand, plus overseas for up to 90 days.

The home thing is ok unless you are using the equipment to make money, if that's the case then you will need standalone cover and it will be expensive. Currently I've got about $20k and it's over $1700 a year.

Geeeeez, probably the reason why the quote was a bit on the high side. Well that actually explains it. I am planning to make money on this but only as a side thing.
Hmmm, might have to look into other options

Hmm how old are you? Would that have anything to do with it - My insured value with them is about that - and around $10k and about to double - worldwide coverage - and at 10kish about is less than that... by almost half...

Just double checked some statements I've received from them and my situation isnt dissimilar to ATJs.
The cover is pretty darn good though - haven't had an issue with them so far (one claim) and if you think about it, its pretty flexible - only wished they covered the equipment if its on my passenger seat in the car.

They never asked for my age so its not that. I only stated that I'll be travelling with my equipment.
I might ask them to re-do a quote including equipment i am planning to purchase in the near future. Maybe it will slightly increase.
Also regarding proof of purchase can I just write down the serial numbers and photos. On previous threads it seems this is the way to go.

It could be where you live. Location can make a huge difference to the risk and so the premium. It could also be what they understand by "travelling".

My insurance has worldwide coverage for me to work anywhere for any period of time in the world. So it might be your "garaged location" as they say in the automotive insurance.
But yes I'm definitely fully insured for; theft, accident, damage, loss etc etc... ANYWHERE in the world. Just need proof of purchase (yes 2nd hand purchases are fine) agreed value, as long as you have a valid receipt. (can be hand written and signed - yes I've checked).
When I've updated my insurance to include my recent equipment acquisitions (more than double increase in insured value) - will let you know. PM me if interested....
Cheers, Nathan.

G'day
I'm insured with GIO for building ($245K), contents ($146K) and toys ($8.5K) all on the one policy costing about $850.
My computer is $88 for $1,500 cover. My camera and lenses is $61.11 for $3,000 (and $20.37 for each additional $1K or part thereof).
I also have $4K of unspecified personal effects which will cover things like camera bags, memory cards, clothes, whatever as long as no item or logical group of items is over $1K.
Coverage is for fire, theft, accidental damage, or loss anywhere in Aust or NZ or elsewhere in the world for a period of less than 30 days outside Australia. I can have multiple 30 day holidays per year and be covered, but more than 30 days in a single trip and the cover ceases.

Hi Bob,
Nice deals you have rolling there mate. Yep that would be suitable for many - but not full or part time Pro's who make money from this game.
AON can also cover you for limited liability. (at additional costs of course)
Cheers, Nathan.

Well I rang up to seek some clarification. It seems anything below 10k will be around the $400 mark.
I've also tried contacting the IT Insurance from Quality Camera (the one in Perth:?) But heard nothing back. At least AON was prompt.
I think I will go with AON once I acquire a few final pieces.
Thanks for all the input/opinion guys
