My wife and I will be leaving for a 17 night Safari to Zambia in September.
And I'm trying to find an insurance company that can insure my camera gear
seperate from any Travel Insurance as they will only cover for a max of $4K.
(Don't even mention my Home Contents with GIO:roll: )
I'll be taking 2 bodies: D2Xs & D2Hs, 3 lenses: Tokina 12-24 f/4, 70-200 VR f/2.8 & 300 VR f/2.8, 1.7 & 1.4 TC's. A Manfrotto 680B monopod, Gitzo 2220 tripod, Wimberly Sidekick, Jobo Giga View Pro Evolution 80GB (storage), + numerous RRS plates, filters, CF cards, Sony HiDef HandyCam, chargers, etc, etc. The total value is over $22K.
Any help gladly appreciated.
Cheers
Marc

I was having a look at the insurance policy we took out for our trip to NZ last year - there seem to be strict limits on cover for total gear - something like $7,000. You can have a look at [url=www.covermore.com.au[/url].

my dad brought home a travel insurance brochure.
it is from QBE Qantas Staff brochure.
he insured my laptop & camera gear.
in the little box it says:
$8,000
Camera, Video, Personal Computer item limit $3,000, other item limit $500 for $171 and covers 1 year.

I went to Japan recently with a bit of camera gear and wanted it insured. I used RACV in the end as their coverage seemed higher and did not limit the amount paid on camera gear, that is, I think the limit was $8000, and all of this could have been allocated to camera gear.
Maybe look at getting two such policies, one for you and one for your wife, if possible. I am guessing you will travel with cameras with you on the plane, and that you won't have much else that is really valuable. If it is in two separate bags you may be able to claim separately if it is stolen, but I would check with the insurer first.

Try RACV travel insurance.
About 2 years ago, I got about $10K worth of stuff insured (laptop, video camera, audio stuff and lighting). They had a inital cover amount of $3000, but this could be jacked up by paying a certain amount extra for every $1000. I had to fax the original receipts, serial numbers and also pics of the items.
If you've got a gold mastercard, they do insurance too. Not sure how good the cover is though.

on my trip i insured with ing, who are just a front for another company, but the electrical limit was $4000 and making a claim for a stolen bag was painless, plus they beat the best deal we had at the time by 300 bucks
but for your amount of gear an insurance broker is going to be your best bet.
let them do the hard work in finding you a deal.

I purchased a Teddy Bear this morning for the sum of $10. I named him Mohammed. This afternoon I sold him on E-Bay for $30. My question is, "Have I made a prophet?"

Given the amount of gear you have I am surprised you don't have it insured as a matter of course. There was a pretty decent thread on insurance a few weeks back that could give you some ideas.
I'm have a policy with CGU which covers about the same dollar value in gear that you have and amongst other things it covers me anywhere in the world for loss or theft. The downside is the it's something like $1500 per year.

Hi tbgphoto
I do have cover for ALL my gear (via GIO Home contents) limited to home/car however.
Thanx for all the reply's, I shall investigate further.
Does anyone know of speciality Insurance companies for Audio/Camera gear ONLY?
Cheers

My home and contents is with GIO like you. My gear is spearately itemised and covered (for extra $) with them as part of my contents. This covers me ANYWHERE in Australia or NZ - in fact I can be in NZ for a year before it matters. It also covers me for 30 days anywhere else in the world as long as I tell them my travel dates. I think it cost an extra $200 or so for $15K

My GIO Cover is very similar to Peter's, but I think the coverage outside of the home is limited to theft? Peter: is that correct with your cover?

The cover I have is stand alone and has nothing to do with my household cover. It covers everything including failure of equipment though normal use, as well as theft even if I leave the gear unprotected. It's pricey but worth it.
To cover you while you are travelling you could get something similar but without the public liability and a few other bits.

Thanx Peter & Andrew
I just been on the phone to GIO and it seems I was misled the last time I spoke with them
I can apply for this WORLDWIDE COVER as well, and will do so.
It's certainly the best & cheapest solution too.
Thanx again

G'day
What is the problem with GIO Home contents insurance for camera gear? I'm with GIO but I've never had to claim. If there's likely to be a problem, I'd rather know now.

Wow, I finally got a reply from AON. Had to use my work email address, but I got it.
Better, they want ~$500 for $13k worth of junk, compared to ~$650 for the same deal from http://www.itinsurance.com.au/qte_direct.aspx
Now I just have to sort out the "can I insure it if I don't have a residential address?" Having to pay rent on a house I'm not using while I'm travelling would make it very expensive... self-insurance would be cheaper.
