I am hopefully buying my D70 in the next few weeks and was seriously looking at the 24-120VR as my walkabout lens. To people who have the lens, do you find you are missing out on not having the wider angle?

I came from a film with a 28-200 and really enjoyed the convenience of one lens. I have 7 month old twin girls so most of my photos at the moment are of them, so it is handheld, indoor often in poor light. I am sure the VR lens will be a huge help in these conditions, but my other choise is landscape photography and I am worried that I will miss a 28 mm equiv too much?

Any thoughts?

When I first got my D70, I sorely missed not having anything wider than the kit lens! My 24mm got a fair bit of use on my film bodies. I've solved that problem now though, with a 12-24 Sigma.

I guess though, that you are the only one who can answer this question...

Losing the wide end was my biggest cncern when buying the 24-120VR. That was in August, and I've missed the wide end maybe once since then.

Not an issue.

Like you I take a lot of landscapes and, yes, I miss the wide end, but it is MORE than made up for by the VR benefits.

Of course LL got me and I have bought a 12-24 Nikon specifically for the wide end. When $$$ permit this is probably what you should do too, but if I had it all over again I'd definitely start with the 24-120 VR as my first lens rather than the kit lens.

Thanks for all the info - everything in life is a compromise - seems like the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in this case vs the kit lens.

Thanks for the info - I am going to try and have a play with both lenses tommorow and then finalize my decision.

Some more questions though - I am planning on getting the SB800 in a few months time.

1) Will the flash work better with any one lens (24-120VR or 18-70)
2) If I get the VR, does that mean I won't need to use the external flash as often?
