SU800 Advice

Anyone had experience with the SU800 as a controller. I'm really after a device to be used for multiple SB800 firing indoors and on location. I know an SB800 can act as a master but i have heard the SU800 has better range and releases the other SB800 to be used off camera.
I have also heard that the SU800 struggles in bright outdoor conditions. I would love to get the pocket wizards but the cost is prohibitive.
Anyone comment on how effective the SU800 is, especially outdoors?
cheers

I have not used the SU800, but understand it gives an extra group than using the built in flash as commander.
I have used a few times, the D200 built in flash (think the D70s works in a similar way), and the range indoors have worked very well, so long as the light (invisible) can bounce around corners etc, like a doorway.
What camera are you using, as other's responses may be different for a D70/D1/D200/D2...
As far as outdoors goes, I dont think the bright ambient conditions would matter at all, but distance would, but perhaps only between the built and SU800(orSB800). At a guess, I would think the SB800 and SU800 would use the same tranmission electronics (educated guess)

Thanks Oz. I'm using a D200 and D70. I have researched to some extent but some discussion seems to say that the SU800 infrared technology can be interrupted by bright conditions outside and that the range is limited o line of sight to about 30 feet. It would be good to have input by someone who owns one to get their perceptions.

Marco - SU800 works brilliantly indoors and does allow the SB800(s) to be used more creatively. I have not tried it outdoors in daylight but would assume that it would not be a good solution. Will give it a go when I have some time.

Thanks Chris. I've heard that it works a treat with macro work but would love to know it's capability outdoors. Can it be purchased through Poon do you think?
cheers
