Can someone please put me on the right track here.

O.K. Here goes,

Say I have a Pic I've sucked out of my D70 & on to my Computer.
I want to send to Printers for them to print
I have done this in the past, Gone into PSCS & Image Size, say 6x4 on a landscape
No probs, but only now when I've done the same but in Portrait I've noticed it makes the image too slender & out of proportion. Maybe I have just not noticed in Portrait Format.

Thats if I untick the Constrain Proportions button, If I have it ticked it's o.k but not 6x4
More like 6x4.5 ? Now if I send this to the printers it will come back to me not filled to the edges and with excess white.

Do I do it this way and just cut off excess or am I missing something here.

I've never realy crossed this problem before.

I just usualy set the crop tool to 6x4 pull it to the area I want then crop. Changing to lanscape or portrait has never been a problem.

Do the crop thing again to an image , then check its properties for image size when done.

I just tried it and both times I got a 1200 x 1800 image dimension (4 x6)

Would thing that if was 6x4.5 the image dimensions would not be right??

I must be doing something wrong along the line, I'll play around some more tonight and see what I can do.

Just crop to the correct ratios: For a 6x4 just pick "constrained Aspect Ratio" from the cropping style and type in width 6 and height 4 for landscape (or swap around for portrait). This make sure that your lenght and height is always correct for printing.

If you still have problems then simply rotate your portrait orientated images to landscape! (Why do I get this nagging feeling that my reasoning is flawed?)

You mentioned resizing the picture in the first post...

If you're using Photoshop then the option you want is actually Canvas Size..

Canvas size will remove the bits that fall outside of the dimensions you specify, Image Resize will squish or stretch the existing image to the dimensions you specify... With Canvas Size you do lose part of your picture, but you don't get the long/fat mirror effect you get when resizing..
