Lens jump

When I first received my 50mm f/1.4 Ais lens and tried it out I was disappointed with the sharpness of the resulting pics.

I continued to try it out with the same results - slightly out of focus. I put it down to my poor eyesight and manual focusing.

Then I had an epiphany - why not focus and then hold the focusing ring as I took the shot - hey presto - perfectly sharp pics.

I can only assume that the shutter/mirror action was moving the focusing very slightly when the shot was taken.

Chris,

Did you try on a tripod? Could it have been you moving the camera (ever so slightly) as you pressed the shutter?

Yes - a lot of my work involves pack shots and I was still getting OOF results when using a tripod.

This pic was with the lens in question, with me holding the focus ring, and absolutely no sharpening in PP.
