I picked up the February Australian Photography magazine yesterday and there on page 22 was "Peruvian High" by Kerry Muller talking about her experiences on a recent trip to Peru with her new D70 (reading the instruction manual on the flight over!).

It's a good wrap for Peru (another place on the wishlist!) and the D70. Kerry commented on the rapport established with people being able to show them pictures she had just taken of them.

I think it's worth a read - confirms again that this is a great camera and that for a traveller the kit lens does a good job.

I'd hope it showed the D70 in a good light, considering the idiot user with no familiarity having only read up on the manual on the flight over!

I seem to recollect taking pics before I even opened the manual

Then I opened the manual and knew where I was going wrong

I'm sure I read comment that the D70 manual was written by a psychopath. I tend to agree. Things didn't get any better with the SB-800 manual either

I think that was one of the things that grabbed my attention was that there was a very positive message from the author. A quote from Kerry "It's an easy-to-use camera and the layout is instinctive. I didn't find the transition from film difficult."

I went through the manual first but after flicking through I put that away and just started playing That SB800 manual though, hooley dooley...

hmmm, maybe I need to go back and RTFM

I think the manuals are a necessary evil. Their bewildering complexity reflect the massive array of options available for these complex tools. I would think that most people would like to know what certain buttons do or what effect an option has on changes to the final image or picture taking process.

It may not be light reading, but at the same time I don't think the D70 or SB800 manuals are poorly written. The English is gramatically correct, the organisation of ideas/options are largely intuitive, the contents page links all point to the correct sections, and ultimately it came free with the equipment. If you just glance through it of course it might look like technical tlhIngan - like if you were to step in on open heart surgery it would look like murder...

Yeah. I read the article. Most of the time he only uses the kit lens!
