Hey guys. Just wondering where and how much you bought your version of photoshop for.

Cheers,
Owen.

My goddaughter bought it on my behalf as a student from studentdiscounts.com.au.

CS3 extended for $215 plus postage. If you or a family member are a student then this is the way to go.

Ah yes, however i think there are limitations on using the student version for commercial use, which is what I'm after.

Thanks though.

Cheers,
Owen.

How did you get the serial number? I think they now request the verification of the student status of the end user through e-mail.

[ethical question]
Is getting a student discount when you aren't a student any more ethical than paying nothing (illegal copy)?

How different is it from "borrowing" an image from a photographer (without permission) and say using it for something that only makes a small amount of money?

We had to provide verification of her student status (her student id) to get the serial no.

I am not using it for any commercial purposes and we are working on PP together a lot of the time.

Interesting question. How ethical is it to have the exact same product and sell it at various prices depending on someone's status. Are there no sttudents using the programme for commercial purposes? Lots of other questions that could be asked, but I feel justified in that she is using it (and teaching me at the same time)

I guess much the same as a photographer selling a photographer at one price from some commercial entity and another price (or even free) for a charity to use. If you own the product, you can sell it however you like at what ever price you want to whomever you want.

virgal_tracy wrote:Are there no sttudents using the programme for commercial purposes?

More than likely there are. And I would have an ethical problem with that myself.

hmm.

how about this for a solution.

if you see it as an ethical problem, then pay full price...

Photoshop is very expensive and for those who have more important priorities then I recommend that they try and buy version 7 or CS which should be available for around $200. Or use Adobe elements which is very good or get the 'GIMP', which is free and downloadable and excellent. Check this out..

OMG!
I never claimed to be an ethical person - I am a poor student, I "acquired" my copy using "alternative" methods.
I didn't know it was that expensive!! I thought it was about $1,600. That cost more than my 17-55/2.8!!

I know a heap of people that get it given to them by TAFE or Uni included in their standard fees. My girlfriend got CS2 included in a course that only cost $600! Then again, it was probably the student version - I can't tell the diff between that and my (commercial) version.

On the ethical question... Australians tend to buy there software more than other countries. After sharing a flat with a couple of Israeli uni students, they were stunned when I showed them my legitimate copies of XP and Photoshop, they said it was the first time they had actually seen authentic manufacturers CD's

I like how you draw the arch from a 3 person scenario to Australia vs other countries... Remember, generalisations are always wrong :D

I always found photoshop outrageously expensive as a photography tool (I'm not talking about graphic design), and consequently don't own or use it.

Thanks for the interesting discussion and points guys.

I'm wondering if I buy a copy off Ebay like Matt suggested, does that grant me the same full rights as buying a normal copy from an online retailer? Is it very risky buying this kind of software off ebay?

Sounds like generalisation about a generalisation.....met quite a few other people from overseas, and have heard nothing to change my mind about that statement. :!:

I bought the full CS3 Design bundle... $2500 later..!

Most other photog's in the area are running 'alternative' version.

I didnt have the money so I borrowed, for me it was a question of integrity if I am going to make a living from my photography.

It used to be with CS2 that you could remove one of the internet files from the folder and it would not report home... therefore you could share the copy with a friend. With the latest CS3 they have covered up that option and so you really are stuck with paying the bucks and buying the real deal.

As a consideration, there will be some people on the forum who have a redundant copy of Photoshop sitting on the shelf... someone might help you out. While some of the new features on CS2 and CS3 are rather nice you can actually do a lot with a copy Photoshop 5.5. Its not the tools that count, its what you do with it that matters.

Actually I was checking out the ebay links and it looked pretty dodgy... 2 different copies both sellers had just 1 feedback rating and they both bought a 1cent book in order to get the feedback. Shopbot.com.au lists a few good retail prices so I'll stick with one of those I think.

If you buy the computer buy/sell broadsheet sold in newspaper agencies then you should be able to pick up a secondhand version of PS 7 for a reasonable price. It's more then most of us will ever need. I wouldn't advise getting any earlier version as they get a bit clunky when dealing with photography.

Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I've been using it since version 4 about 8 years ago, and totally agree that the newer versions have a bucket load more handy features than the old ones. I'll keep a lookout for a cheap copy, thanks.

you could buy a cheaper older version and then upgrade...
some of the ebay prices are due to this - they sell you and older version and then an upgrade.

You can always look at capable Photoshop "substitutes" until your funds allow the purchase of the real thing. For instance, the cross-platform PhotoLine32 is the closest thing I've seen to PS, and it's only €59/$80. It supports 16-bit, CMYK, layers, vector objects, actions, image browsing, etc. etc.

Prior to discovering this recently I used to recommend the free GIMP to students (I work in IT, higher ed), since it supports layers and is compatible opening and exporting layered PS files. Speaking of education, if you're a student you can get CS3 for about half-price, and I'm told it's upgradable.

I also understand lab versions don't need to be activated, but it's doubtful you'd buy that many licenses... ;-) I hope to find out soon enough; we expect to purchase 100 licenses of CS3 any time now.

About $680US for a legal, boxed, legit, <insert conscience clearing adjective> version of CS3 photoshop.

The company I work for is about to fork out for 4 licenses for CS3 Professional Design Suite (one for me :D )... i'm not going to ask what the damage on that is. I just don't want to know.

That would depend upon from whom you purchased. Possibly yes, possibly no.

Bugeyes wrote:Australians tend to buy there software more than other countries.

That's an interesting statement to make. Do you have figures with which to back it up?

After sharing a flat with a couple of Israeli uni students, they were stunned when I showed them my legitimate copies of XP and Photoshop, they said it was the first time they had actually seen authentic manufacturers CD's

That would be a factor, more of their lack of exposure to the real world, than anything else. Let's see .... they're uni students ... how much exposure to the corporate world, and in how many countries, would they have had ...

Again ... uni ... let me translate ... maybe late teens or early twenties === young.

Students .... ditto.

I certainly wouldn't be taking their (lack of) exposure to the real world with a high level of authority in this regard.

Yes, there's a lot of piracy around, and yes, one is highly likely to see evidence of it in the circles within which uni students - from probably anywhere in the world - circulate.

But that's not all that relevant, and the fact that they might have pirate versions of xyz installed does not translate to a lost sale for the authors of xyz. The most likely scenario is that they have it installed because they can, but had they had to pay for it ... they would find something else, or simply go without.

When it comes to the real world, most businesses understand that they need to pay for the services they use, and that includes the software they purchase.

To answer the question. I upgraded to CS3 Web Premium from my previous copy of CS2 when it first came out - cost for the UPGRADE (so not the full price) was $759 at http://www.citysoftware.com.au which was the cheapest I could find online at the time. I chose this edition because I wanted Fireworks and Dreamweaver as well as PSCS.

Compared to full price enrolling as a student for a semester seems pretty reasonable... even paying full fees :) Might be worth doing a BFA paper or two to learn more about photography...

I admit that I've got an older version of PS and have not upgraded because I don't see the value. But then, I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8 (a pre-Corel version without spyware), BreezeBrowser (non-Pro, from before Chris Breeze reneged on the license) and so on. I'll upgrade Bibble before I buy anything else exciting I think, but PS is a possibility if I ever start taking decent photos.

I went to report this, this morning.

Just send a PM to any of the mods.

We've been looking at phpbb3; when we looked at an earlier RC, there were some very serious issues with the conversion process causing it to lose ... lots and lots and lots of posts. We considered that to be "not a good thing".

In order to do the conversion, we need some time, because we don't use a standard phpbb front page, and we also need to, because of our own customisations, bring them into the codebase. It's about a day's work for Leigh and myself all told ... and at the moment a day is something neither of us currently have.

Hell, I'm having trouble finding time to put my radio shows together right now.
