Trying to find an old post - self lens service

Hi there.
I remember reading a post a long time ago explaining something about servicing your lenses yourself - something about it's easier than you think...
I can't seem to find it with searches - does anyone know where this post might be?
My 18-70 kit lens had a lot of condensation inside it on the recent overland track walk I did. I would like to pull it apart & give it the once-over.
It focuses slow now - it used to be fast.
It did this once before but came right after a few days.
Maybe I should really get serious about the 17-55DX...
Maybe I should stop drowning my lenses in the rain...

Adam, I seem to recall Onyx wrote that, just did a search and couldn't find it, but you might be luckier. Hope that is some help

Hi Adam, I can't for the life of me recall when or if I had written that - but I think I can recall it was the time I was playing bounce the lens on asphalt. But nothing became of the lens that it needed any service attention.

I can suggest packing the lens with some absorbant silica gel in a bag. Apply gentle dry heat like in a computer case with CPU at 100% load hopefully it'll dry out any condensation inside.

Onyx, I may be wrong and you didn't write this, sorry. I thought you wrote it after dropping something and not long after your post on how to adjust your backfocus yourself.

Great logical advice ytou have given with no chance of putting it back together wrongly. :D

Thanks anyway chaps... I am fairly technically minded so I might just give it a go... I have a fair amount of dust inside the lens too, that gets picked up whenever shooting into the sun.
At worst, I could stuff it completely, which would force me into a 17-55dx... Hhmmm....
