Apparently they have also beaten their 40% marketshare target in the UKand elsewhere......

Now with all those $ wonder what there doing with them?

I'm a big Canon fanboy, but it's still about time somebody started putting some decent pressure on them IMHO!

don't forget that there are different levels of consumers from your average joe to the pros. What would be interesting is seeing the breakdown of the consumers and which bodies were purchased, etc.

I have a feeling that this is only based on the over the counter electronic store type of consumers, which is fair enough. I think Nikon's hold on the entry to mid level cameras is great, they just need to work on the pro bodies. Canon have awesome mid to pro bodies, except their entry level bodies are bad compared to the Nikons. Each company has its strengths and weaknesses!

thats surprising. especially cnsidering how feature packed some of the competition are, pentax k100d in particular. even thouigh nikon iq may be better, features are what grab the low end. perhaps its price point that is generating sales, i dont know.

and nikon are veryyy low in the P&S rankings. 8th or something last time i heard.

It's where the most transactions occur, but they're low value, and low profit.

Consider that it's roughly 2.5 PHDs to even an entry level DSLR like a D40, and the ratios can only deepen, and the margins increase, as you get into more feature-rich bodies.

And as you sell DSLR bodies, you open up your market to selling glass. And other accessories. Once a purchaser has his PHD, what else is there for him to spend his $$$$ on? Not a whole lot, I'm afraid.

The only interesting thing to me in that report is that Sony's market share has fallen to 2.6% down from 20%. That's what happens when you sell shite.

Yes. I noticed that too, but what surprised me about this is that it seems the Japanese public is actually aware of that smelly stuff that Sony are selling.

They're low[er] value ... but they're certainly not low profit. How many 30D/400D do you think they sell for each 1D?

I'll be damned if I can find it now, but there was an article/interview with a Canon rep some time ago, where they talked about most of their SLR revenue coming from the "entry level" lineup.

That's interesting. I was traveling around Spain in May and June and was very aware of what other photographers were using. Perhaps it was because my digi cam and just died and I was making do with a compact, but at all the tourist and photogenic spots, with regards to the consumer/ entry level the Canons out numbered the Nikon's 10 -1. Most of them appeared to be 350 or 400 d's with kit lenses. When it came to the higher end, the ratio was closer even, with the Nikon's taking a bit of a lead. Cameras such as the 30d and 5d lagging just behind the d80/70 and d200 models. Of course my data-gathering was not scientific I just know that every Tom, Dick and Harry seemed to be sporting a Cannon neck-strap

i thnk gary was refferng to low value and low profit per unit. but as the turnover is so high in this part of the market, you generate a reasonable profit on the balance sheet.

it is obvious that the flagship models would produce a far greater profit if they sold the same numbers as the low end models.

i was led to believe by someone in the know that due to R&D, and marketing (ie giving away cameras to influential pros, and selling cheap to important clients), canon dont make much at all (if anything) from their flagship models. but due to fancy accounting it doesnt seem like that.

Canon also has many other product lines to fall back on. - Photo copiers, scanners etc etc etc. - so they can afford top be a little bit more generous.

R&D is obviously the most expensive part of electronics. This is where the market will ultimately be sorted out. - however with a paradox - even though Sony has huge resources behind it and considering their expertise in the T.V. and video camera market, they still can't get a decent DSLR to market.

Just as a comment on appeared camera popularity, Katie and I noticed many more Nikons mostly D200 and D40(x) models then any other camera. Even saw a fair few film Nikons which I rarely do in Sydney. That said there was Canon, Sony, Konica Minolta, Olymp..... etc all out and about but definitely more Nikons, which I didn't expect.
