Scored a Product Photography Job =)Just scored a product photography assignment and just wanted to get some info and advice from pps. Anyone use this - I'm planning on getting it for the assignment http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... &rd=1&rd=1 Am not charging much ( well this is not finalised yet ), but the assignment will cover the above item and extra for some food-KFC , but atleast I can use it for further assignments in the future.. Any comments on DOs and DONTs... Did you guys just charge an hourly rate - photography & post processing ??? Thanks
The main thing to do is experiment as soon as you have the tent and lights. I change my lighting for different types of product photography (wines vs, electronics).
Also, keep in mind that the tent shown is very small, so depending on the product type it may restrict you somewhat. Chris
-------------------------------- I started my life with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left
the product to be shot are Candles and other smaller items... though some candles can get quite large - will need to confirm with client.. thats a good point - maybe invest in something larger for potential larger work... i thought 80cmx80cmx80cm is a large box... if anyone have any links on similar products on eBay or other stores it would be much appreciated. thanks
Re: Scored a Product Photography Job =)
I've got a simliar tent for product stuff... and find it handy but the same effect can easily be achieved with a roll of white paper, a nice sunlit outside or inside area and photoshop... or a cardboard box with the sides and back cut out and replaced with typing paper.. but if your going to get one get the largest you can afford... and the best quality or you'll be cloning out the wrinkles in the background all day... Oh the lights... the cheap spot lights from supercheap at about $9 each do the trick nicely too.. Do's and don'ts... don't be too cheap... I am probably a bit too cheap myself but you will find that the studios charge a fortune for this kind of stuff... and here I was wondering why my clients were falling over themselves to get their products to me when I was charging $300 - I found out later that their cheapest quotes were in the thousands... for approx 1/2 a days work... so research your prices... and find out what they want too .. some of my clients want low res images for the web only, but others want high res for printing in brochures etc they pay extra for that... I charge a set fee depending on the job... its agreed upon before I accept the work.. that includes the collection of the goods (or travel to where the goods are and shooting on site if they are large etc)...the shoot... the pp work and the return of the products and a disc of images... Hope that helps a little... The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list...
I have that same light tent - shot everything from Jewellery to Model Cars, Food and Flower arrangements - Been VERY happy with it..
The way the lights are mounted to the stands could be better, but that said, they have never failed me, I just think they could be better The velour backdrops are plenty big enough and two table tops ( Black and white) are included... This is from the first batch of images I ever took with the Tent. This is straight from the camera, NO photoshopping, just resized... You are welcome to come and have a look at it and see if you think it with suit your needs... Cheers Jason http://www.motorsportfotos.com
