A big scare! Is my lens O.K?

Well as you can probably tell by my relatively low post count i am quite new to these forums and digital photography in general. Anyways, i was lucky enough to recently obtain a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS lens from Hong Kong, been loving it since.

However, about 10 mins ago as i was getting out of the car after taking some photos with a mate a i hear a smash on floor :? I look down in utter dismay and shock and see that my new lens had rolled off the seat of my car into the gutter . I quicky ran inside to check that nothing had smashed and IS was working properly and as far as i can tell everything seems ok.

What would be the best way to check that everything is running normal on the lens? I took some sample shots and they also look good however, im worried something may be wrong that i am not picking up...

If the pics are OK, bits do not fall off when handling, no unwanted noises from the lens when focusing, etc - then I would say it is OK

Yeah that all seems ok, are these things generally built to handle rough situations?

A matter of luck really, so it must be your lucky night - buy a lottery ticket :)

Adam, your lens seems ok, good news. As you probably read in the FAQ, the image limit is 800 pixels on its largest size. Your image is 800 x 1200. Can you reduce it down? You can see already how it has made all the posts in this thread unreadable without scrolling. Thanks

its best to take your test image wit flash as you did at 135mm you would get some blur even with IS at 1/60

shoot at 135mm at 1/200 f5 whatever iso allows for correct exposure

take one with IS on and one with IS off

it looks fine to me

Ok i took some more test shots as you suggested and here are the results (i know they are crappy photos :? )

taken at 135mm @ f5, ISO 130 1/200

First off i just wanted to show you this...it was taken into the the sun with a lens cover on...is this just some unwanted glare?

its all looking good

last two examples are probably better examples
optically everythign checks out unprocessed thats a sharp as these lenses get

now to further test it use is in either mode 1 or 2 in a situation where is would kick in like taking a shot outside while in a car or shaking the camera around
if anything would of been damaged the IS components would be the most fragile

if everything checks out i think its safe to assume your lens is fine

as a side note my nikon 70-200 dropped out of my open bag on my back directly onto concrete once and on several occassions i have dropped it from similar heights, the lens still worked fine, these things are designed and built well iknwo a person who got theres runned over with a motorbike and apart form a bent filter element the lens has been working fine

It's a fine lens Adam. That lens is Canon's flagship. It's designed to be smashed on the ground on a daily basis for years to come and still perform flawlessly. I place my official seal of guarantee that your lens is in no way broken. :)
