Vale Jim Leroy

Many of us marvelled at the skills of Jim Leroy in his stunt plane at Avalon this year. Those of us who were lucky enough to meet him personally at the opening event remember him as being a very personable, funny guy who loved to see the looks on the faces of thousands of children watching him fly.

He died today enroute to hospital following a crash in Ohio and he'll be missed by many around the world.

I'm just trying to locate a shot now...

Jim died at Dayton, Ohio, a day after the other pilot died at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

I saw the story on the news tonight. Jim was passionate about his airshow work and lived to fly. He will be missed by many especially his wife and young kids.

I know that I have a shot somewhere here of Simon and him together at Avalon but do you think that I can locate it ... not at the moment.

Here is one of him Knife-edge streamer cutting at Avalon in one of his 2 Bulldogs. These are / were specially built S-1 Pitts with 450HP.

Finally found the CD with the Avalon images on it....

Here's a good one of Jim in a typical smiling pose. (Don't worry about the other ugly mug in the shot). Thanks Steve (Griffin) for taking this one.

I can still vividly picture his bloodshot eyes. Did the story indicate what the cause of his prang was?

Only that it was prbably due to altitude miscalculation. I suppose there's always a possibility the autopsy may reveal something (eg blackout) that caused a possible lapse in concentration, but anything is mere speculation.
