Hi all,

Has anyone used ACDSee version 7???

I have downloaded a trial version (on work PC so no RAW images) and it looks quite impressive, very quite to display JPEG images.

Not sure how to use the database and catalouging features yet but will get to it.

Apparently it supports RAW file format and if you purchase now you get ACDSee Photo Pro also.

Any comments from users?

Woody, I have used ACDSee a fair bit since the previous thread was active. I believe that v7 is a useful bit of software, it generally behaves itself as does what you want. The NEF handling is OK - not as sophisticated as PS for example, but pretty good. I like it.

The database works well, I think it is worth your while to investiagte further

I just noticed your question to me in the previous ACDSee post. I am using mode 11 Adobe RGB. Should I be using something different and would they look better in ACDsee if I did? I have no idea on the modes, in fact I haven't looked at them for months until just then!

Marvin, this whole colour mode issue is a bit of a problem.

I was noticing some loss of colour when posting photos, and it turned out it was because they were in aRGD mode which has a larger colour gamut that the net can't handle, and they need to be in sRGB (whether converted or taken that way)

There was a thread very recently where this was discussed. I'll try and find it in a minute.....

I don't think this an ACDSee matter, but it could be. Maybe ACDSee only uses sRGB, and there is a problem because of that. Hmmm, more research needed.

What does the database section do?

At the moment I'm trying to sort out my photos from my trip but I was thinking "Wouldn't it be great to have a database where I could just dump a photo and catagorise it by photo type and what the photo contains by multiple keywords ie. Category - Portrait, Keywords - Nephew, William, Beach". Then when you want to find a photo down the track you can just put in things like "Nephew AND William AND Beach". Have considered writing a PHP and Postgres webapp to do it but if there is something that does it already then that'd be great.

Does ACDSee V7 do something like this?

Acdsee7 does do exactly that.

You can database/search fields like: Caption, Date, Author, Rating, Notes, Keywords, user-created Categories.

I personally only use the Date and the User-created Categories, like Flora, Fauna, People (I split that one up to Family/Girlfriend/Uni etc), processed, backup, forum posts.

Very handy program.
