Dos anyone know how to do this, i have struggled with it for sometime, i want my Softbox to trip my two of camera SB800's?

I can fire the SB800 to trigger the softbox flash, but not the other way around, can this be done?

I only need it to fire on the flash of the softbox.....surely i can be done?

Thanks

Dan

hi Dan,

D200 right? pop the on camera flash up (dont worry, its timed to not effect teh image), go to menu flash > commander mode. You can use the camera to trigger the SB800s. in fact, you can set the SB800 to remote mode, and control the power from the camera menu (very handy change power if more than one light).

just make sure you have the same group/channel set camera to SB800.

also, make sure the built in is set to commander mode, that way it will flash and finish before the shutter even opens, and want add light to your pic

if you want the SB800s to trip from another simple flash, set the SB800 to "SU-4" mode. that like cells on studio lights, they will flash from other flash, but you have to adjust them manually.

hey so that wouldn't effect the image at all .....the pop up flash?

I also have my wireless control thingy on top of my camera (yes i know all the technical terms dont i .......lol) the one that sets my soft box off.....the pop up still 'pops up' just not fully but it does fire......

Thanks dude, your a champ!!

try in either direction, timing might be key...

comander mode, will work well (its a great flexible potable lighting system), dont need radio triggers etc.

give then a go. you will love the flexibility and control (from camera, not walking over and taking time).

have fun

As said above, your SB800(s) have to be in "SU-4" modes, and when they are in SU-4, put them into manual (mode button), and it functions just as a studio strobe.

I can fire the SB800 to trigger the softbox flash, but not the other way around, can this be done?

Yes, if you can trigger your softbox flash with something else. ie. sync cable, wireless triggers, or the onboard flash set at manual 1/128th power (or 1/16 whichever is smallest u can get).

I only need it to fire on the flash of the softbox.....surely i can be done?

Again, sync cables, wireless triggers (pocket wizzards, or poon's wireless triggers). Or a very very weak flash out of the camera (you can use a piece of cardboard in front of the camera's built-in flash to stop it from going into your exposure.

Hope I've answered what you really after...

SU-4 is the way to go. Mind you, I've had the slaves get tripped by bass frequencies as well as club strobes and normal fluorescent lighting (when switching on - try it to trip yourself out!) :)
