Printer Profiles

Hi Guys,
I realise much of this has been covered before, so a quick reply/s will certainly suffice.
My monitor shows, what I believe to be 99% correct skin colour as taken by my D70. Both my printers however print the skin tone (and the remainder of the photograph) very much darker and certainly quite unnatural. The skin tones on a second monitor look identical to the first.
The printed photos look virtually identical to amtter which printer I use. The printers are a HP 7960 and an Olympus P10 dye sub.
What do you think, the skin tones on the 2 monitors look the same, while the same skin tones on the 2 printers look the same, but totally different to the monitors.
Regards
Nige

Hi nigel,
I'm not an expert by any stretch on this sort of thing -
BUT, I had the same problem - monitor to printer output was wildly differing. I tried image files of all sort, papers, inks etc of all types and even other image files from other cameras...... but same monitor to printer gap. Because I am no expert I went to
AIM - the Scannerplace in Box Hill Melb. and ordered a custom printer profile to be made for my printer using a specific paper and ink. I purchased the "Basic" profile option and it works 100% fine. I have an Epson 1160 A3# printer and my A3 prints are just fine.

I also work with the 1160. Love the output on high gloss paper! Never had any problems with the colour calibration though. how much did the profile cost and how accurate do you think it is?

Matt K,
The profile I got was the cheapest at $79.00 I was told by the fellow who knocked it together that for an amateur photog. such as myself would be the go. He didn't press for a higher end profile (and more $) so I went basic.
I believe it's pretty good. I'm after a
very good resemblance from screen to page. I got that. If you were to be rather serious with results then go a step or two higher. It's cheap - done online (mostly) and fast. I believe it to be accurate. I have a pro digital photojourno friend who swaers by the top profile for his archive paper stuff.
