Not sure if anyone remembers, but a few years ago there was a photographer who had portraits that were really up close and personal. I think he was NSW based and the end result was somewhat desaturated and high contrast. One of the photos was a kid with freckles and wearing goggles.

I'm trying to remember the photographer's name. Can anyone help?

I am pretty sure that I know the image you are talking about... the same guy also some shots of some older men in bathers (I think)... sorry I also can't remember his name... but maybe if I bump this thread to the top again someone may read it and be able to help you...

Nope not Max Dupain. Bindii, thanks for the help - yup that's the guy but for the life of me I can't remember his name.

Damn - he did a whole series of photos in the same style - there was another in the same series of an 'older' gentleman, and another with 2 boys..... he had an article on him in either Capture or Australian Photographer ... if I can find it when I get home from work, I'll let you know .... he did a custom draganizing filter on his work to achieve the desat/high contrast look......

I knew I'd find it somewhere - the gentleman's name is MATT HOYLE.
He won the 2004 Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year, and the series of photos you are talking about are from the Icebergs Series, shot at Bondi.

Roadtrip is a gallery of shots from America - amazing, but to me not as engaging as his Australian stuff.

I will have used the levels and/or curves control to set the exposure and the colour balance, and then I might use the hue/saturation or colour balance tools to adjust the colour. oh yeah - the other thing, all the iceberg photos were shot with a wide angle lens, 17-35mm Nikon D100 and Fujifilm S2 pro digital slrs.

Thanks for that information from me too.... I was wondering who you were on about! I had a look at Matt Hoyles latest book the other day.... the Encounters one that gets a mention on the website.... have a look at it if you get the chance... it is fantastic! Very clever image making.
