remember that shooting as a professional, and include selling prints, will make a difference if you use house holder's insurance......

big pix - no, and I am not a Professional.

Mine is itemised, ie anything over $1250 in value on my home contents insurance through CGU. Covers anywhere in Australia, and for up to 90 days overseas from memory.

Hey big pix, I saw the thread in the other place too. I checked out insuranzdirect.com.au and did an online quote out of curiosity. Surprisingly low cost. $7.5k coverage for <$200 a year in my case (minus fire damage, yes to beyond Aust & NZ).

Since the people I live with stubbornly refuse to get home contents insurance, I thought I'd be destined to be uninsured forever. AON IMO seems to cater more for the money making pros.

I have spent 3 weeks researching and went with AON. Their policy has the best wording and benefits.

Photoinsurance is a broker, so is buying from an underwriter somewhere. His wording is "ok" but has some unusual clauses. (Like dont get your gear pinched between midnight and 6 am cause its not insured in all cases, and the wording on if your gear bag was pinched whilst near you on a shoot but not "on you"was also a bit dubious!)..
Their prices are cheaper but the wording is a bit "suspect" in the words of a few insurance people I know who helped me read thru all the jargon.

insuranzdirect.com.au I didnt check out, did an online quote tonight and they are certainly cheaper than AON, but I would want a full policy wording before I said more.

AON also cover practically anything. EG if I decide to take my laptop or tablet PC and break it on a photoshoot, its covered!

I bought 17k of cover for about 550 bucks. cheap really.

AON > *

Remember guys, with ANY insurance - you only get what you pay for....

I don't work for AON, but have worked in the insurance industry for over 19 years, so I am extra careful about reading the PDS and check all the exclusions etc...

AON is also a large international insurance broker and although I'm now retired I did work for them for a number of years a long time ago.

It's worth while finding out who the underwriter is as they ultimately pay the claims. Many of these types of cover are placed offshore through agencies like Lloyds.

I'm just an amature so just cover my stuff under the personal effects section of the home and contents policy.

I actually came onto AON on feedback from another photog who lifted his gear bag up "with an open zip" *Insert breaky-crash sounds here*
AON paid up very quickly and covered gear he didnt even have listed I understand? Thats good insurance cover I think!

I just signed up with insurance direct. http://www.insuranzdirect.com.au/Photographers/

You pretty much sign up online, was pretty straightforward. The couple of questions I had were answered by Michael.

One thing I queried was the overnight rule leaving stuff in a car. Based on feedback about this from me and other photographers they have changed their policy so overnight is now defined as 12am to 6am.

Their policy is pretty similar to other mobs in most respects.

I got Overseas cover as well for about a 10% additional cost.

I found their prices considerably cheaper than the other places I made inquiries with so I would recommend getting a quote from them.

I've been looking at Aon as well, has anyone dealt with a claim on the other two companies yet? Yes they are considerably cheaper (I want worldwide coverage as I'm of OS next year for 30 days), but are they any better?

For me AON was 550ish, photoinsurance about 355 (but I'd need to clarify the extra for worldwide) and insuranzdirect were 300 ish.

However there are no mentions of the excess with insuranzdirect that I can see in the PDS. And well as photoinsurance seems to be a broker I guess it depends on the underwriter as to the PDS itself...

Brett, sounds like we are in a similar boat, I'm paying 550ish to AON and about to renew (and update the listed gear a little from last year). So far I haven't had to need them, but I don't want to risk Egypt without insurance.
