Some absolutely brilliant shots in there.
I had a look at the 50 year archive. The shot of the tanks in tiananmen square has to be one of the most powerful images of all time.

It got me to thinking, and although this is a toughie, i thought i'd ask it.

What do you think is the most powerful, dare i say, best image of the last 50 years?

Very stirring photos. Especially some of the ones from the last 50 years.

I don't know what is the most powerful pic of all time but the 1962 one (soldier hanging onto the priest after being shot by a sniper) did it for me.

It's like with his last bit of energy he is clinging onto the priest for sanctuary from the hell he's in. Amazing...

In regards to the last 50 years worth of shots... all i can say is that people can be true b*stards. Every 'great' shot is a shot of desperation in some form.

For me, the 1972 shot is the one i remember the most, as it was etched into my childhood through the media... very disturbing, but tells the story as it was...

These are all very powerful images. I didn't see all of the past 50 years, but why are they all about human suffering from war, poverty or famine? It's pretty bloody shocking if you ask me.

Where are all the positive things in the world????

For me, the 1989 Tiannamen Square photo is probably one of the most stirring... mainly because I remember watching that video on TV, at a time when I was beginning to appreciate the issues in the wider world around me. Still brings a lump to my throat to see that clip.

Has anyone else seen Capture the Moment? Its a book of all the Pultzer prize winners from the past 50-odd years. My edition ends with 2000 but there may be a more recent one.

My "favorite" in it is probably Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvy Oswald, which I'm sure some of you would be familiar with. Why do it like it? Because, as the title says, it captures the exact moment when a devistating event in history occurs. When I look at it, I see a tiny slice of 1964, yet one that is most tragic.

is, IMO, impossible to answer. It may as well be rhetorical. Even if we were only talking about prize winning photos, there is no way I could narrow it down to a single solitary one that represents the absolute best of the best from the past 50 years.

I bet the NASA head boffins head the same problem when deciding on what to put on the Voyager satilite... Its a big ask to sum up the entire human race in a single gold plaque

NB: I'm not having a go at your question, rokkstar, its just that I can barely get my head around it.

All shots are very powerful images of what they capture at the point of time, the sand storm would have been a very quick shot and running for cover

I know it's a cliche, but "a picture is worth a thousand words" sort of sums up how powerful these images are.

It is indeed a gift to be able to capture such emotions in image form.
