Hi all,

With all the rebates available on printers right now I may be tempted to replace my existing (and aging) Epson 830U and HP ScanJet. I am looking at a multi-function device - I know there will be compromises - but if anyone has some advice/experience with these please let me know:

My requirements:
Photo Scanning - must have & quality important
Slide/Neg Scanning - nice to have
Printing documents - must have & important
Photo Printing - must have & limited use
Network-capable - must have & important
DVD/CD Printing - nice to have
Print from cards - nice to have
ADF on scanner - must have
Duplex - not that important

Currently looking at HP C8180 or HP C7280. Anyone have experience with either of these, or any others taht meet my minimum requirements and that does not cost over $450 after rebates?

Many thanks in advance,
Gary

They're very good - much better than expected. The slight additional cost of a multi function on top of say a dedicated inkjet makes them good buying, if for those rare occasions you need a scanner or fax function.

If you're used to HP, then go for that brand. IMHO Canon and Epson offer slightly better ongoing costs, as their inks are generally cheaper than comparable HP inks. HP bundle their printheads on the replaceable inktanks - which means higher costs on genuine replacements, but if you go the 3rd party/refilling route - it means if the inks clog or stuff up the printhead, you can simply replace the inktank and along with it the printhead and hopefully avoid needing costly repair/service not covered under warranty.

Hey Onyx, just wanted to say thanks for the advice! I meant to post sooner but work has this nasty habit of getting in the way :)

I ended up getting the C7280, great little AIO (so far). The price dropped by $50 and has a $100 rebate but the info about the print heads being part of the tank and the duplex ability pushed me over the edge. My retiring Epson spent more than half her ink unclogging clogged heads - having a clean one for each ink change may be a little more pricey but I think it will make me sleep easier.

Thanks again, really appreciate your help.

Cheers
