Although the exchange rate is favourable, buying camera equipment in Bangkok is problematic at best.

I honestly think that you'd do better buying here first and claiming back the GST. (I know that it is not likely that you'll be able to find a D3 here, however.)

I was in Bangkok in October, and camera gear was overpriced for tourists.

You may have more success if you have a Thai contact who can do the research/haggling for you.

I haven't been to BKK for a little while but when I was last there the prices on D200 etc were not favourable especially compared to HK. I will be there in about 12 days and will see if it has changed.

I think that you'd have less luck finding a D3 in BKK than you would here.

I frequent BKK for Work and have family there. I wouldnt suggest it for camera gear either as its overpriced.
(Even when having a local do the dealing for you to "thai prices" instead of "Farang prices"..)

I always do a 2-5 day stopover in Hong Kong to get stuff on the way thru/back :D

I was in Bangkok in July and was surprised at the relatively high prices. I thought that considering Nikon Lenses were made there in their thousands that a few might have found their way into the marketplace. Overpriced and undersupplied. I would also be concerned about lenses bought second hand there due to the extreme humidity conditions.

Just came back from a BKK business trip this morning. Camera gear is way overpriced as mentioned. Found a couple of D300's there for approx AUD2600. Was quoted AUD600 for a Nikkor 85 f/1.8. Although there's room for price negotiation, it's just not worthwhile if there are any warranty issues.

Likewise for mobile phones. Most shops in Pantip Plaza are selling unlocked iPhones for around AUD1000.

Try the 5th (or 6th?) floor in MBK (Ma Ban Kroon) near Siam Square for Mobiles, a whole floor with about 300+ seller booths!!
