SC-29 or SC-28

Ahoy folks,

Just wondering whats the difference between the sc-29, sc-28 and any of the non brand name copies?

I just want a little more flexibility with the SB800, rather than being mounted on the D2h. I have a sb600 for the creative lighting off the camera, but when shooting in the pits, on the grid etc, i feel having an off camera cord would be a good advantage.

Interested in opinions.

I believe the only difference between the SC-28 and SC-29 is the latter had AF-Assist built in. This means that even with the flash off the camera, you will still get AF-Assist in low light. The end that sits in the hot shoe has the light in it to assist the AF.

If you don't do a lot of low-light shooting, the SC-28 will be more than sufficient.

There is another difference, the SC-28 has an additional socket to plug in another flash unit (on the side of the cord's hot shoe)

As mentioned, the SC-29 has the AF assist built in - it sits on the camera's hot shoe. This only works with the SB800 I believe.

I have the SC-29, it is excellent.

FWIW the SC-28 has an additional two sockets. I've got one which I don't use since I like the AF feature of the SC-29. I'd always wanted the SC-29 but when I rang up I was told it was "discontinued", so got a SC-28 instead...grrr....and that was a couple of years ago. Anyway I got a SC-29 a little later.

If you don't need the AF assist the SC-28 is fine. Mine's on the block for $50 (incl postage for NSW)

I do plenty of off-camera flash works in dim environments, and I find the extra AF-Assist light is something I depend on. I don't know how I am able to take shots without it at the dark while using off camera flash sync.

I've got the 29 - haven't used it in ages, but it does work with the SB600 perfectly - and AF assist works with this flash also
