Questions about hard cases

Can anyone enlighten me as to whether there is any significant difference between Pelican or Storm cases. I've used Pelican and Kinetics before but need a larger case to stick the camera gear in the back of the 4WD.

Also how good are the padded inserts for protection?
My feeling is that whilst they offer perhaps more versitility in configuring the case they would not be as effective a shock absorbtion system as the foam cut-outs.

And one last question...
Who is a good place to mail order through?

I can only speak about the Pelican cases. We use them at the ABC and they are given a very rough life. I also have a large (wheely version) I wouldn't even look at another brand. They have proven themselves over many years to be a very protective case for me.
This place has some very good prices.

BUT I will be keeping an eye on this post to see if anyone has anything to say about the Storm brand

I am in the same situation as Rob. A big Pelican with wheels 'cos I cannot lift it off the ground when it is loaded   Over the years a smaller Pelican has been kicked around the deck of many boats and my camera has always survived the experience. Cannot go past them.

Hi

I just took possesion of a Pelican 1514 yesterday. Its my first so i cant comment on how it performs in the field yet...

However, I have the dividers plus the lid organiser and it holds my D70s, D300, D90x plus 5 lenses and 2 flashes and a host of smaller items. Its solid, heavy and well built. It has wheels and a pull out handle which makes it very easy to transport.

I paid $146 US plus $70 shipping. It was less than half the price of same item anywhere here in Aus.

If you like I can give you the sellers details.

Hehee...yeah mine is the 1514 which is the 1510 plus the dividers (not the pick and pluck foam). So I got that plus the lid organiser for around $200 AUS.

Just the case is over $300 in Aus...divider is another $120 odd

Ive been using Pelican cases both for work and personally for over 10 years. Ive used a variety of different sized ranging from the little 1010 up to the 1640.
Ive also added some Otter Boxes becuase I needed different sizes from what Pelican had available.
I would recommend both Pelican and also OtterBox, They are brillient cases.

Ive also got 1 Kingchrome case to try out too. I have no doubt that it will stand up to the knocks, but it seems cheap and nasty next to the Pelicans.

From a friend (and member here) who used to work for TLE (electrical wholesaler). He now works for another electrical wholesaler.

Give your local TLE a call, they may be able to get one in for you at a good price.

My underwater housing, ports and strobes go in mine and it also goes in with the checked luggage.

Yes please. Looking at delivery costs in Australia and some suppliers want half the case cost to post it to you.

TLE - don't know that acronym, who are they?

Just as an aside to the discussion, the foam in my 1550 Pelican is starting to come adrift from constant use over the past few years. Is there a remedy or do I just go and get another two sheets of the stuff??
