Report on Wetlands Meet 19 Feb 05

Postby stubbsy on Mon Feb 21, 2005 11:50 am

After some trepidation about the possibility of rain we ended up with a 40+ C day.

The meet was attended by Killakoala, Matt K. & his wife Philo, Sheepie & myself (Stubbsy). Killa was nicely attired in military issue camo gear so he could sneak up on the wildlife, while the rest of us were in civvies. We headed off at 9:00 am armed with enough gear to make all the P&S photogs stay away in droves. The wetlands is quite large and I'm a terrible navigator so we ended up going the wrong way a few times, but we managed to do a circuit of about half the area - arriving back at the visitors centre about 12:30 sweaty, overheated, but with only 1 or 2 mossie bites and no noticeable sunburn.

Along the way we got a number of great pics (see the links below). Nearly forgot to mention - we also saw one or two ducks which we obligingly shot (with our D70's) :D and Philo almost managed to adopt a particularly friendly one that came out of the pond and up to us to pose for a shot.

Having revived ourselves sufficiently to get in our baking hot cars we drove the 5 minutes to my place (air con had been on all morning so it was nice & cool) where I provided a cold lunch and some cold drinks and some beer and some wine (Tyrrell's 1995 Vat 9 - very nice).

At around 3:30 or so the Sydney crew headed off to be greeted by a typical summer thunderstorm that was barrelling north from Sydney.

All in all a great, albeit hot, day.

A good summary Stubbsy - I hadn't got around to putting any words down, so this will do :)

Did we mention we didn't get any rain? (well - not until the way home anyway!)

I certainly enjoyed the day out. Thank you Peter for the report and more importantly, for the lunch which was very nice indeed. I loved your 'Stubbsy's Home-Made Relish' and the tabouli was likewise tasty. Oh, yeah, the Tyrrels Vat 9 is a very nice drop too.
Steve.
