Wide angle lens shooters CPL question.

Thanks to Birddog I'm now the proud owner of the Nikkor 12- 24 DX lens.
I read either in Dpreview or another review that this lens is best not used with a polariser. Can't remember which review but I did read words to that effect. For the life of me I cannot see why not? Are there any 12 -24 shooters out there using a CPL on this lens? :?:

You'll need to get a slim polariser otherwise you'll get some vignetting at the wider end (around 12mm). The good slim ones are the B+W slim or the Nikon CPL II.

Nope - but then again I have the Sigma 12-24mm and so far I have not found any need for a polariser. But I do have to admit to using nik efex polariser now and again

Thanks Gooseberry and Chris,
I really enjoy the deepened blue sky effect from a polariser so I'm keen to try one. I might have to research a little more as to vignetting. It's a bit pointless going to the expence of a super wide angle only to be reduced to 14mm or tighter just to serve my whimsy......

Cheers.

Yes, I used the Super Pro 1 series CPL, same as UV, it's 3mm thin and it cost over $145.00 for a real thin 3mm Hoya or nearly $200 for a B&W 3 mm thin CPL

I have the 12-24 DX, also bought via Birddog :) , and I have the standard Hoya CPF mounted on it. It cost about $80.00.

This filter appears to be about 7mm thick.

I just took a series of shots at 12mm and there is no vignetting.

I did the same as cricketfan with the DX at the wetlands shoot. I also noticed no vignetting. I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

Regular CPL and no vignetting .........Sounds like very good news to me. I see that the construction of the 12-24 DX focal module is different to the somewhat clumsy sliding affair in the Kit Lens. The thread apperas to set further back from the glass - no science there, just having a good look. Stubbsy, I'll look forward to seeing a 12mm frame with CPL - without Vig. !! Thanks Birddog, I was wondering if an ultra slim unit was avail. Maybe not required by the sounds of it? Thanks cricket fan and stubbsy.

That what I advised and told stubbsy to use first on his 12-24, IMHO, you don't need the slim one, but if monies are not an object, why not!
I have all slim UV and CPL for my Nikon gems some of them are B&W.

Here's a shot at 14mm (no postable shots at 12 - will try again at the weeknd then update this post) with the 12-24 DX and a Hoya CPL to demonstrate the lack of vignetting. Click the image for a larger version. Aside from being resized in NC for web posting there has been NO PP on this image.

Thanks Stubbsy, No vig here. I'd really be keen to see a 12mm frame with CPl if and when you have one to show me. Shall not commit to new filter until then!!
