Photo-based art in all still mediums will be considered, including all types of analogue and digital photography

A 35mm slide AND an 8x10 (20x25cm) print of the ONE work being entered must arrive at the Art Gallery of New South Wales...

:?::?::?: Erm... how would you go about putting a digital image on a 35mm slide :?::?::?: I'm sure it's possible, but if the competition is open to digital images, you would expect them to accept digital formats...

I think the trick is to plug a slide scanner in backwards. May need a specific driver though.

Cheers
Dean

Birddy, that is what I thought. That prize is a D2X plus a few lenses! Leek, I am with you, time they moved on.

They're called film recorders.

eBay sells some overseas usually, but for a one-time use, either call up COFA's Digital Printing department or The Lab.

I thought this needed stirring it up a bit, so have just sent them the following e-mail:

I have just read the entry conditions for the above competition and have a question...

If you allow "art in all still mediums ... , including all types of analogue and digital photography", then why do you insist on submission in the form of "a 35mm slide"?
Are digital format submissions also allowed?
If not, could you please recommend a process for converting a digital image into a 35mm slide?

Let's see what they say

I don't think ya'll understand. It's not about moving on... this is an art competition for an art gallery... it's a lot easier for someone shooting on either 35mm or medium or large format to quickly get a 35mm slide of their work done, and it's probably going to be better quality than anything most PHDs will give... in fact, the only few cameras I can see that'd beat the 35mm neg at the moment are the big Canon, the big Nikon (D2x) and the Kodak 14 c/n.

It also comes down to being able to look through the images quickly.
They're likely to stick the slides on a lightbed and sort through the ones they like that way... it will make it much quicker for them.

Well, I just gave you a way to do it. It's possible. A lot of people still do it and many still do to further the darkroom process.

Leek, you're not barking up a tree here that'll make them look like idiots. If they get back to you, they might point you to the same places I just did.

Well here we go - I got a response already...

Thanks for your email. Unfortunately we only accept a 35mm slide as the judging process is done with a slide projector. We are however looking at changing this for all future years.

I have been given information that 'The Lab' in Waterloo can transfer your image onto a slide and the cost is $25, and $4.95 for any duplicates.

Details are:

The Lab
10 Danks Street
WATERLOO NSW 2017
Telephone: 9319 6335

I hope this helps you.

Seems they are considering 'moving on' in future years...

I don't see why they can't switch from a slide projector to a data projector in the middle of the judging process, but I'm sure they'll think of that for next year

great if you win... but if you are a finalist you must meet all the costs of display and all you get is (admittedly good) Qudos...

If they are as prompt with the $15k as their email would be nice. I can see the have gone for consistency, maybe next year they can force all the film guys to get a scan, then throw it up on a power point presentation  Leigh, thanks for all the good and amazingly accurate info

Leek, great work in chasing them up.

MHD, I still think the D70 challenges are better

just use slide film kodak elichrome -
use your d70 to check the scene - then
shoot with film.
i am bit worried that you have to hand over the slide to them. are they goign to claim all copyrights over it after you send it in? great way to do stock photography

I doubt that they would do that. AGNSW will use pictures for promotional material only if it's in show or in their archive. It wouldn't be a smart move, especially if the artist in question belongs to a private gallery, and many of the people entering will.

According to the entry rules, only the winning entry becomes the property of the AGNSW. The $15,000 prize money covers the cost of the galleries acquisition of the winning image.
