Hi guys,

I don't know whether I need more medication or whether I am extremely slow in following instructions, but could some kind person who has used the Expodisc or Pringles lid just confirm my procedure.

I take a pic of the main light source, eg the sun, in manual mode, setting exposure. Then I go into the WB menu and select that particular pic as my reference phot.

Is that correct or have I misread the instructions.

Do preset WB,
Place Pringle lid or Expodisc on the lensand aim to the light source, hit the shutter release and check to see if on the LCD, if it's flashing"Good" then you are in the game.

A few more hints

1) to get to preset mode hold down WB button, turn command dail until it says PRE, then release and then hold down the WB button until the LCD has PRE come up flashing
2) when using Pringles (never used expodisc) make sure the apeture is wide open, this stops any detail in the image that the camera will use for WB (the d70 wants a uniform white)
3) Make sure you have no exposure comp, you dont want the pringles lid to be over exposed...

Nigel, your way is also a correct way. Take a picture and then use that as WB reference. What has been suggested, preset WB, is equally valid. As is selecting gray point for WB in PP instead of specifying a particular colour temperature or worrying about it in camera - this method is, much to my dismay (;)) not mentioned at all in the White Balance Technique PDF.

Me again Guys,

Many thanks for all the info, I sincerely appreciate it.

Still having probs, even after reading all the advice and reading the tutorial.
Did everything to the letter, everything manual, app set to F22, VR turned off, even took off the uv filter. Point towards the sun, took shot and it says "no good". Tried this several times, same result.
Now inside, typing, having a scotch with beer chaser. Perhaps I should have a bottle of good red instead, or come to Birdys next meet.

Hi Nige,

I carry my manual around, so what I do is this:

1. Change the WB to "pre" (hold down the WB button (the one with the ?/key picture on it) and scroll using the primary scroll (the thumb one) until I get to "PRE" on the top LCD.

2. Hold down the WB button for a second or so. The screen should change to that the word "PrE" flashes.

3. I take a picture of the back of the user manual (where its all white).

4. The camera flashes "good".

That generally works for me (I read somewhere that you can either take grey or white - so, seeing as I have something white handy... Someone pls correct me if I'm wrong!!).
