Moran Photographic Prize

Congratulations to the winner and finalists of the Moran Photographic Prize, I say with only a slight hint of bitterness.

Seriously, some fantastic images on there - chosen from over 3,000 entries.

It couldn't have been an easy job picking the finalists and, I must say, entering a competition like this is a great way to develop a sense of creativity, technical skill and planning, or so we found.

As an aside I read an article about the judgeing process. It was one judge sitting in front of a screen scrolling through them. The first review to get to a shortlist as basically look at the image for a few seconds and either bin it or put through to the next stage. So a few seconds to make an impact - probably works well, I knkow the photos I like here jump out immediately.

This was my entry, based on the idea of the day of a working mum that never ends, which is completely ignored by the little one who's focus is on having fun.

In retrospect, I can see a lot of faults with the image, particularly given the need for an instant "wow" effect on the judge. I will not blame the haste required to photograph a child, but it didn't help!

I think the image is cute, and again..I think this could be used very well as a stock photography site...i.e for 'the working Mum'. Sure is a cheeky grin from Alex there!

Some fine images there. I love 'lower your ears'. The standards are very high....but the prize money attracts a lot of creative professionals so it's always going to be a tough nut to crack. I can't wait to see the exhibition.

Yes, they caught my eye, too. The photographers must have poured countless hours into preparing these shots, too bad they forgot to take the lens cap off... It's good to see that the judges decided not to punish this technical glitch!
