Has anyone ever made any money from these sites as Shutterstock or Fotolia?

Yes,
I have had cheques from Istock, Dreamstime and (most of all) shutterstock...

This is not an endorsment, some people do not like micro stock as it pays a pittance per image, but you do sell a lot because of that...

I second Scott's comments. I'm in istockphoto, fotolia and shutterstock all of which are selling quite well, shutterstock being a runaway winner and the more you put in, the more you get out. It might seem a small payout per photo, but it's a different structure compared with normal stock places.
You'd be surprised how much you can make from shutterstock.

I've been with Fotolia for almost two years and have been very happy with it until lately.

They made some changes to their search capabilities which seemed to favor certain photos more than others.

Then, this week, they went to a Subscription based program, with a very low payout to contributors. There's a lot of discussion and unhappiness about that.

I'm biding my time, and not submitting anythin new until I see how deep the fallout is.
