This is the thread I hoped I never needed to type

Unfortunatley I have dropped my D70 & VR lens with not so good results.... Well it might not be all that bad but well see.

The camera landed on the lens which had a UVfilter on it. The UVfilter shattered (I don't think there is any damage to the actual lens) and the lens hood was jammed into the filter ring. Anyay I was able to get the hood and filter off without to much trouble.

The camera still works however I don't think the VR function of the lens is working (or not all the time anyhow). There also seems like something is loose in the camera body.

I have contacted our insurance company and submitted a claim but I need to get the camera repaired.

Where abouts in Sydney should I get the camera fixed? Do I need to send it away at all?

I would like to get the camera fixed in the next 2 weeks as my hike through Kosioscko is in 2 weeks time.

Has anyone had to get there camera fixed and if so where did you get it done at?

Gee, I'm sorry to hear of this misfortune Woody.

I believe you would have to send the camera to Nikon's agents, Maxwell, for repair.

I have only had my camera returned once, for a replacement LCD, and that took forever.

Maxwell's would be the obvious choice, but there's a cxamera repair place in the city, on Elizabeth St between Liverpool and Bathurst Streets, that might be worth a call. They're likely to be quicker and cheaper than Maxwells, and given that it's not warranty work ....

Those shops, they don't or won't fix the DSLR, I had customers came back to me and off to Maxwell, they only fix the SLR or film camera, they haven't get the any knowledges in DSLR technical, again parts will be ordered from Maxwell, I have Kristine's camera looked by them yesterday afternoon, even the focus screen, they could not replace and they have no new replacement parts. It'll off to Maxwell this morning.
Waiting game at Maxwell now is 3-4 weeks

So it looks like I might have to send it to Maxwells, bugger.

I just called Nikon on Broadway and they will apparently fix it, they charge $65 to have a look at it (which gets taken off the final cost of repairs) and they reckon it should only take about 2 weeks?

Has anyone dealt with them before?

I don't mind if it is more expensive as it is an insurance claim.

They will send it to Maxwell for repair, they won't do it onsite.

And insurance claims with excess of $___________/?

Drat - sorry to hear of your misfortune Woody. Any chance of a pic of the damage to the body & lens?

Bugger, sorry to hear W00DY! If your lens is buggered and you can't get it back in time, you're welcome to borrow my 24-120 VR or 18-70 DX (as long as you don't drop it! ).

No visible damage to the body just the rattle inside. The lens also looks ok except I think the VR is stuffed (from soem rough tests at slower shutters).

This camera is built pretty damn good.

Thanks for the offer but I don't think I would be comfortable borrowing equipment while hiking, too many things can happen.

I think I might hold off on the claim until after Easter so I can still use it over the break.

Yeah that is what I am thinking. I think the images are a little bit softer since the fall but that could just be my imagination?

I used it with the 85 f1.8 on the weekend and none of the images were all that sharp (of course this could have been the photographers fault).

Woody - the rattle you notice, is that aside from the usual orientation sensor that rattles?! If the camera still functions perfectly, it may not have anything wrong with it at all...

Fair enough. Though what's the worst thing that could happen to the 18-70 DX? I think they dropped it at the factory, the VR doesn't work!

No, you're wrong! the new firmware for the 18-70Dx will auto u/g it to VR and extend its apeture to 2.8

Hmmm I don't know.

I have never noticed a rattle, but then again I have never held the camera to my ear and tapped it

I might have to check out my dads D70 to see if it makes the same noise. If that is the case then I might only need to get the lens looked at.

And yeah I guess I can live without my VR for a while, however there will be no more Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible style jumping in the air and taking a photo while doing a somersault shots.... Of course it is the VR that makes this possible
