Question on RF vs RM and uses.

Okay.

After lots of trawling and reading I'm a little more educated on this subject but none the wiser to having answers to the finer points. Hopefully someone here can shed some light on the subject for me.

Recently I've been looking into stock photography. Firstly I've decided not to go with companies such as shutterstock simply because A) I'm in business for myself as an Electrician and I know how people who are willing to work for nothing (Quality of the work does not become a factor here, the selling point is by based on cheap prices) The same would go for Photography I would imagine. The more people willing to sell their images for nothing the cheaper those images become irrespective of quality.

I've been looking at sites like Corbis and Alamy. I haven't yet applied to Corbis but have been accepted to upload to Alamy with all 4 images passing QC.

If I have a image where a logo or brandname is clearly visible but not the focus of the image can I license the image under RM and where does 'for editorial use only' fall into this category? What impact does this have on the saleability of the image?

I've also noticed on Alamy that some images are licensed under RM AND RF? How can someone have a Rights managed Image, and list it as Royalty free at the same time, to me and my understanding that sort of negates the the whole idea of licensing an image under Rights Managed?

I'm on Alamy also.

Alamy's speciality is editorial stock although others sell well also.

If you have an image with a logo even though it's not the main subject in the photo, this image can only be sold as a rights managed image unless you can get a release from the company or owner of that brand/ property. This image can be used only for editorial purposes by the purchaser unless they sick a permission from that brand owner/ issuer.

I am not aware that you can sell RF and RM at the same time on Alamy. It's either one or the other. If you click on "no property release" option when you submit an image it automatically gets assigned "L" (RM) licence so you can't sell it as an RF image.

Another important point to bear in mind is that once you sell an image as RF (anywhere, not just alamy) you cannot sell it as RM since you've lost control of the image's use.

Hope it somewhat clarifies your questions.

Best

Alex
