Canon Pricing to Change??

Just a heads up for all those who buy their Canon gear from retail outlets rather than from online dealers.............

I was in my local camera place at Caringbah yesterday doing some price comparos between retail and an online retailer. The bloke who was serving me (Dave from memory) said to hold off on any Canon purchases as Canon Aust will be reducing the prices on just about everything sometime in the next month. According to him, Canon Aust realises that it is in direct competition with just about every other countries Canon factory rep and are lowering prices in order to compete. He specifically mentioned Canon USA. He is of the understanding that Aust prices will soon mirror or be very close to Canon USA prices.
I'd like to point out that this is rumour at present, I have no affiliation with the retailer in question nor do I work for Canon. I own a canon camera, that is all. If it is true then yay for us, if not then he's a lying bastard!!

Sounds like good news.

All the good Canon Lenses are down as of this afternoon - my favourite is the 85/1.2L - $3800 down to $2500.

If only I wasn't about to buy a house here in Melbourne...

But still, for example, a 24-105 from B&H is:

1059.00 * 1.05 conversion = 1111.95 * 1.1 for GST = 1223.15

Add $50 US for shipping = 52.50 Aus

Total = 1275.65

New price 1420

It is still $144.35 AUS more expensive to buy it here. It is an EF lens, so Canon will cover it for warranty globally (I have asked)

I still think they could come down more!

Are the prices from QCS the new Canon RRP or the new discount prices?

Don't forget that B&H sell below US RRP, so the differences might not be as much as thought.

In any case, I don't think I'd buy from B&H to only save $100 or so.

WooHoo :D Sounds like my rumour was correct. Now this is going to make my wide lens selection even harder. Hope the 17-40 F4 comes down a bit too. What will be interesting as some have already said is how low people like d-d go to combat this. That may take a while tho because if they already have stock in at previous prices they aren't going to want to make a loss just to get a sale.

Has there been any indication of prices of bodies, specifically the 40D?

Don't forget that buying from B&H you'll also get slugged with US$ transaction fees on your credit card, and for items valued over PP1K, you will be hit with GST (as you've noted) and most likely a fee for customs processing from UPS or FedEx. The total price from B&H for this item will probably be about another PP90 heavier.

FWIW, forum price is 1119 including shipping.

I agree that for small price differences alone it's not worth buying grey, but oft times you can actually get supplied far more quickly when buying off-shore.

That was going to be my next question, how will this affect Poon's pricing. Because I'm not privvy to those prices at present I didn't want to speculate but it appears by Gary's comment above that it will still be substantially cheaper. Ultimately this pricing change will only make a difference to those who buy retail.

I have Nikon f1.2 primes.

I'd like a 5D with a 24-70 (a good copy) and a 580ex2.

No, it was only EF if I recall correctly.

Gary, you are correct, I forgot about Customs fees above the GST. That would darn near even it up I suppose, which is good.

Even if there was a$144 dollar premium, I would probably buy local anyway, but I do like to see the same price as the rest of the world.....

I am also one of those people who flock to US websites like B&H to check out the current prices on certain camera gear. It would be lovely to have Australia follow their prices, the fact that I sometimes see the Canon 430EX for $280 including shipping (or so, give or take) on B&H and see it at $350+ in Australia really puts me off buying aussie stock.

I am still patiently waiting for the 5D to drop in price!

I misread that as "to US levels" for some odd reason and got all excited
I was told to wait a few months to see if the new 5d mk II or (whatever it will be named) comes out. When that day comes, my poor mother can stop living in fear of me using her credit card to pay for BH shipments and getting slammed with tax/customs clearance. :)
