what are the best ultra compact light stands to hold a sb800 flash i know you need some custom rig to fix one of these to the sprocket head of the stand

currently im using my tripods and gaffa tapping flash heads to them it does the job but in some cases it would be better to have a proper stand and attachment
by ultra compact i mean something that can packup into a suitcase not some huge manfrotto C stand to hold a studio strobe

Why not a cheapy small tripod, then attach the supplied Sb800 stand to directly or by a quick release plate to the head? depending on the thread mount on the tripod it may fit directly to the thread of the stand.

ultra compact, light, high quality clamps etc, cant beat the manfrotto nano stands, think they are called 001.

add an umbrella bracket, and a hotshoe shoe, which screws onto the brass spigot that comes with the umbrella brackets.

How high would you require the SB800 to be? will the stand go on top of some other objects?

I bought 2 of the $49 stands, they are very cheap, light and portable. Weights next to nothing and extends tall... The only problem is... when you extend it too high, it can't stand the wind if you use them outdoors... I almost dropped a SB800 down the cliff because of it...

Clamps and clips are really good if you plan to use indoor with furniture everywhere...

A friend has one of those Manfrotto Nano Stands, it is awesome, makes me want to get one, or two.

I also ordered a few Lumopro superclamps, double-fold umbrellas, etc - making my kit as portable as possible. (Back to Perth at the end of the year to shoot a wedding, so want to be as mobile as possible.)

To be honest, I probably wouldn't have done it if I wasn't so desperate to get the Strobist DVD set MPEX can be a right PITA to deal with, although they seem to have been better in the last few days with what appears to be a new bloke running the web orders dept (desperately needed, IMHO).

We have one of the Manfrotto nano 001 stands - they are very light and fold down to about 40-50cm. Because the legs are flat aluminium, you can drill through them, put a ring through it and attach a strap to go over your shoulder.

Together with the Manfrotto brolly adaptor, the total cost was about $140, and the quality is very good. We didn't get a cold-shoe adaptor, just use the stand of the SB-800, which has a female threaded socket. I have been able to attach both the SB800 and Metz to the adaptor simultaneously for when I was shooting both film & D200. Worked a treat.

As previously mentioned, I have a few of the Manfrotto 001 nano stands as well, along with a few foldable umbrellas, very very compact and very useful. But of course it won't stand in a windy condition.

although i do need one quite high with a boom to use as a hairlight stand

with the hairlight, are you thinking directly behind the model or off to the side from behind? If off to the side, then there's no need for a boom. If it's directly behind, erm you can have a look for the Manfrotto mini boom arm however don't expect to be able to position the arm on an angle going up as it's fixed perpendicularly to the stand. (excuse the ASCII art diagram, but it's what it'll look like)

With the umbrella bracket, it'll give you tilt capabilities in terms of angling the light.

I'd recommend looking at the Manfrotto 305b mini stacker stand as well. It's sturdier but still light and easy to carry. It works for me anyway .
