It seems like a much more affordable ExpoDisc, I wonder how it compares? :)

Hi,

I actually bought from Woollies a set of white plastice lids (all different diameter) to put onto opened cans.
They are white and put in front of the lens will actually give quite good results when shooting for pre- white balance.
Another thing I did, when taking a photo of a purple fringe lilly with a D70 was to use a white sheet of paper to do the pre - white balance.
The colour was pretty much spot on !

HTH,
CD

I got one here, it works ok when you're in the sun or shade... but it's not a great idea when you are under indoor conditions and different lighting sources...

I'm still using the old school grey card.

BUMP!!!!

When I had a reflector in my possession (a mate lent me his) I was using the white side of that to shoot in the PRE mode, that worked a treat. I am interested in this Poon product, anyone bought/used one since? I think I may get one of these:

http://www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/readmore.php?product_id=55991&id=129.78.220.71223953490&user=&Item1=&Item2=&Item3=

BUT I am not sure if I would be bothered to use it even if I do carry it around with me.

Cameron a few years back the Pringles (yes the chips) lids were all the rage here as they had a white lid which was perfect and small to carry. Not sure if there is anything similar now but probably is in a supermarket

Hmmm looks like i have to go to the supermarket (but then again I could just get a Poon delivery - ebay price is a little better than forum price atm)

Just be aware that white isn't always "white" - just take a look at a colour chart from a paint company and you'll see how many variations of white there are. Even subtle differences in the hue of the white can make a huge difference to the white balance. I have seen huge variation between two different brands of A4 copy paper.

Might be a good idea to get a grey card which you can then use to compare the results from the lids, etc.

I got one here that I used twice... Still got the packaging for it I think, don't think I'd need it and you can have it if you want.
It is 77mm sized.

I have never used one. I occasionally do a custom WB from a grey card but nowhere near often enough to justify one of these. I notice D-D-Photographic are selling a model for $200! It's made from plastic and probably cost $4.00 to manufacture. Buyer beware!

i got one out of curiosity. every time i try it, i wish i hadnt. then again, maybe for the $4 or so it cost on ebay you get what you pay for.... Shooting in RAW, its just as easy for me not to get too excited about WB and just fiddle with it in pp. when needed.

I noticed the WIDE variation in prices, Poon sells his for $7 (currently due to poor PP) and the ExpoDisc costs an arm and a leg.
