Avalon Airshow

Postby Nikon boy on Fri Mar 04, 2005 7:10 am

Hello Everyone, i am new to this forum, and am seeking some advice
on getting good images at the upcoming Avalon Airshow,,
I have been taking pics of aircraft for many years,,,but with film camera's,
(all Nikon,last being F5), i now have a new D70, and secondhand D2h,
I have a good range of lenses,,monopod and tripod,(have attended all Avalon shows) i still feel i have heaps to learn,
in the past i have been shooting at 1/250 for propeller types and 1/500 and upwards for jets,
what do i need to consider now i am in digital mode,???
i.e. shutter speeds ,white balance, focus area selections,iso/auto??
i shoot mainly in jpeg,
i have a press pass (work in newspapers) and will be at the event for 6 days (obsessed)
any advice would be greatly appreciated,

thank's

Hi Nikon Boy,
I don't know you have come accross the following link or not my thought just re-post it:

Shooting airshow in digital and film are not difference, my thoughts.
A PRESS pass should help you alot in securing some good points to start,
If I'm going down on those days, I'll be around or inside with the USAF F16/ F15 Pacific Demonstration team or inside Boeing Pavillion, I hope the organizer won't tell us "fib" this time as promised: a Stealth Fighter and other new aircrafts.
I was very disappointed last time with all the same old technos which I have seen for many years in my carreer's life and many airshows in the US.

Hello Birdy, thank you for your help,,,,i much appreciate it,,,,

i have ''heard'' rumours that the ''promised'' stealth (F117)
and Harriers are not coming, but who really knows at this stage,!!!!
going on past performance ''anything'' is likely to happen,,

would very much like the pleasure of meeting with you if you attend,i met with Greg B the other day and he spoke highly of you,,
so if you can spare me a few moments let me know via the forum ,

i will keep you posted as to the ''latest'' rumours if you like,

once again thank you for your assistance,

Thanks Nikon boy,
I also monitor them thru another channel and my buddies from Kadena and Yokota AFB, Japan that where the Pacific Demonstration Team comes,
Heaps of them are in Avalon right now same as ground support team, liaison officers, coordinators and their armory statitic display goodies.
At this time, nothing new more than about their usual activities but could be changed at the last minutes, you know the military don't you?

Nikon Boy showed me a few prints of aircraft (among other things) - they were all good, and the shots of the Connie were really something. What an amazing aeroplane. Hopefully we will see a few posted here shortly.

A macro shot of a flower by Mrs Nikon Boy (Nikon Girl?) was pretty special too.
