wide angles and filters

hey everyone, im currently considering putting my tax return to good use on some new glass and have heard you pretty much cant use filters on ultra wides. im currently using cokin p square filters on a 17-55 and was wondering how wide you can go before vingette etc becomes a problem.
*edit* on looking up cokin sites i discovered the larger filter holders. duh
nikon d300, 10.5mm f2.8, 17-50mm f2.8, 50-150mm f2.8. Bronica sq-a 80mm f2.8,. sunpak 383's and a 622 for kicks, pw's, and other assorted bag fillers
