Point and shoot recommendations - not G10 or G9

My wife is after a nice compact point and shoot for her (she has made it clear its not going to be a g10 to g9 .... i tried!!). Her criteria

1) needs to have a decent zoom (3x and over)
2) needs to have movie mode ( i am thinking at least 30fps in vga)
3) prefers canon
4) should be light
5) should have face detection

Any recommendations??

Thanks in advance
Cheers
Mak

I have had a Canon S3 IS for around 18 months and two overseas trips. The S3 has been
superseded by the S5

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_s5is.asp

The S3 has been a fantastic travel camera (and the S5 is the same with better specs),
and would be a great choice for anyone wanting a good P&S.

- excellent zoom range (12x)
- uses AA batteries (my Varta 15 min rechargeables are excellent)
- good inbuilt flash
- flip and twist LCD (surprisingly useful)
- excellent image quality, really exceptional
- excellent video quality (640x480 30 fps, looks great even on the large screen TV)
- good looking camera, small but not tiny, comfortable to use
- plenty of options from simple to more control, but the aperture priority is ideal most of the time
- image stabilisation
- reasonable results at 400 ASA (well, they clean up Ok with Noise Ninja or similar)
- face detection (whatever that is, but the S5 has it!!)

Well worth serious consideration.

We have just won a Canon S5-IS in a competition and are looking to sell it.

It is brand new and comes unopened with full warranty intact. The retail RRP is $799 (I think) we would like $500

Sorry to have to inform you of this, but most places are selling the S5IS for about $500 these days, it is a great camera though and a good buy, but I would suggest grabbing a Panasonic FZ-28 or a Nikon P80 for a little bit more.

I bought a Canon SX1000 IS for my wife and its a great little P&S.

Pros:

- 10x optical zoom
- Nice size LCD
- Good comfortable size - even in my big hands
- Image stabilizer
- Face detection
- 'Wheel' controlled like a 30 or 40d
- Powerful Pop up flash
- Takes great movies
- Only $250

Cons:

- Struggles to focus over 4x optical zoom in darker situations
- Grainy at 400ISO or higher
- No viewfinder - only live view
- Movies are 4:3 - no 16:9 mode.
