My Manfrotto Stinks

No, it's not what you're thinking.
After reading the various posts I realized that my old Gazornanplatt tripod (name changed to protect the guilty) had to go. So yesterday I bought a smallish Manfrotto and head. The thing is... wow... even this relatively inexpensive one has their outstanding build quality. The only problem is it smells really weird. Is this normal? Is it the thread lube or metal finish or something?
Any thoughts?
I'm definitely keeping this baby, but it's smelling up the room.

Maybe the LA smog has contaminated your legs

Yep, it's probably the lube.
Personally, I still prefer the ergonomics of a Manfrotto over a Gitzo (quick snaplock leg bits versus twisty tighten thingy's).

Your post got me sniffing my Manfrotto (thankfully nobody else was home) - geez that came out funny...nope no smell (it's about 1 month old). Did not notice a smell when I first bought it either.

When I visited 8 years ago , The locals said it was not smog but "Coastal Haze"

So Cal Steve, if three members of this forum get divorced because their wife comes home 2 days after Mardi Gras and finds them sniffing their tripod, I am holding you responsible (oh to be a fly on the wall with a D70)

Chris & Glen.
I've just laughed the loudest ever when reading a forum post. Keep this up & Steve's innocent sounding thread will need to be moved to the humour section

Maybe the Italian guy that built it had a lot of garlic for lunch?

SoCal Steve,
It is obviously causing a problem, so I would ring the store where you purchased it, and tell them of the problem. Then ask if they have another one in stock for exchange.
Goodbye,

I have heard of Alfa Romeos leaving the factory with a workman's leftovers from lunch hiding under the back seat.
While I have good sources (sauces?) for this story, given that in Italy one mostly would go home for lunch and long after-lunch break, this is therefore a story I consider to be urban myth.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Glad you got a laugh out of it too.
The smell seems to have dissipated a lot so I won't worry about it any longer. Maybe it was just my socks!

Name that Smell
