My 'other half' has been complaining of being totally uninspired and so forth and has been looking for some really "inspiring" photography books. He's into landscapes and 'doesn't like shooting ppl' so looking for a book that would i guess be inspiring in those regards. I've been through a few of the bookshops but I don't have a clue what to really look for ( i like people and find landscapes dull ) ... and i dnt generally find inspiration in books perse... I am looking for a nice christmas gift so thought it would be great thing to pick up for him.

there seems to be a lot of great landscapers on the site just wondering if anyone knew of any really good books that i should be looking at>?

Great landscape photographs? I would choose Ansel Adam's books, a great books for photographers and B&W landscape lovers.

Other than this, you can just walk into Dymocks or kinokuniya bookshop and look for those large photo books, I believe one called "Earth", lots of colourful landscape of our planet.

I suggest he obtain and read a copy of Susan Sontags 'On Photography'. It is available in Penguin paperback....has very few pictures in it....but is a masterwork on the origins and social impact of photography. It is essential reading for those studying photography at an academic level. It is also inspiring.

Yep, I'm with Andre. Galen Rowell was (he sadly died in a plane crash while on assignment in the States) is a legend and you certainly can't go past his work.

"Mountain Light" is a classic.

I find that the images that inspire me most are those that go with a story

Over the years I have gathered a few books on photography, the books are about either the photographer or about the history of the art.

“The World of Olegas Truchanas” by Max Angus, I bought this in the 1970s. It may still be available from a second hand bookshop on the web.

“Simply Peter Dombrovskis” is available from West wind press

Both of these because of the links with the fight to protect the south west of Tasmanaia.

“Images Illusion and Reality” which is a book written for an exhibition at the Academy of Science in 1986 in Canberra. It was an exhibition about the history of photography and of a period before modern photography. When taking photographs was an entirely different process. Again my copy dates from then.

“A century of Japanese Photography” by the Japanese Photographers Association. I bought it early in the 1980’s

A book about a different culture and photography as a different art.

For something different
“Everest, Mountain with out Mercy” National Geographic Society. It reminds me of my time in Nepal, and the risk that we all take there. And that some do not come back. It will tempt him to go there.

There is a new book featuring Ansel Adams work. The National Parks project, which is covered in this book, was quite magic.

One recent book which I added to the shelves was by Joe McNally, and titles "The Moment It Clicks". It's primarily about off camera flash, but pictures and descriptions shows how great Joe's ideas are.

When I first bought a DSLR (mt trusty D70), my wife bought me this book:

Photographing Australia by Steve Parish.

A big book, heaps of great shots, explain how he took them, even the gear he carries, has areas in each State he recommends etc. A really good book. About $60.

Some great landscape image books there for suggestion, and I love having a look through them myself, but if you are after looking for a book to sit down and read, I recently read Darryn Lyon's Biography, Mr. Paparazzi, its an awesome read, lots of great adventures, and just makes you want to get out there and take some shots of just about everything.

Have a look at Borders in Macarthur Sq. They have a good selection of photograpy picture books.
