The front section of my 28-70 fell off yestday whilst shooting a festival. Luckly it fell into my bag. I was pretty sure this would have to involve and insurance claim but it appears i have fixed it myself (and the lens is still sharp as)

That must have been a bit of a shock. Were there (in hindsight) any warning signs? Looseness, noises etc?

Well that is bloody scary Thommo. Very lucky to have your bag in the right place at the right time.
Was there a threaded ring in front of the section that fell off, or srews, or something?
Regards Colin

Basicly there are 6 tracks in 3 groups (so 3lots of 2 tracks) that are cut out of the front section, each one matches up with these sort of screws inside the lens barrel, when the lens is at 28mm its possible for the front section to be pulled off!

I think that something is missing in your lens. You should have to remove the front element in order to get the front barrel out. I suggest that you have it looked at before it falls on the ground and costs you a packet.
