I’m sure that would not be a problem but it would not take much to call the zoo and just ask

I was at the zoo earlier this month with a D300 and Nikon 18-200mm. Not an especially big package, but no-one seemed concerned.
At the gorilla section, there were a couple of people with long telephotos on tripods during the presentation by a keeper, and this also seemed to be accepted OK.
Enjoy yourself.

No problems with pro cameras at the zoo. A 600mm lens is much too long for tigers at Taronga. A 200mm is plenty.

no prob at taronga.
as per matt's comments. my 300mm was too long for tigers so i was using the 105. 200mm is probably ideal.

For full frame I would agree, but for the left nostril a 600mm would be better

i had called the zoo but i only manged to speak to a secretary who casually said all should be fine.
i explained in am a professional but on this occasion i was just going to shoot for myself no commercial purposes or i wouldn't sell the images
phillip i havnt crossed to canon i just use both systems now, get the best of both worlds.
a 600 may be too close but i'm sure ill find something to to shoot, its a practice day i still working on mastering the canon system

If full frame, 600mm would be good for the elephant enclosure, chimps, gorilla and sunbear (from the top of my head)
Other than that, 200mm is pretty versatile around the zoo. Regarding pro-gear, I've seen people carrying 400mm and ups, packing vests and monopods. Whether or not they're pros, who knows. Have fun.
