Im looking to buy a wide angle lens to add to my current gear as follows:

400D + battery grip
EFS 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM
EF 70-200 F4L IS USM
EF 50 1.8 II
580 EXII

the lenses that i am considering are:

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Sigma Lens 10-20mm F/4-5.6 EX DC HSM
Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8

Has anyone used any of these? any opinions?

anyway i just wish to use this lens just for some extra width, such as for indoor occasions and also for the odd landscape photo etc. i also understand that at 10mm on each there will probably be inherent distortions.

Is the canon lens worth the extra money over the Sigma or tokina? Or are there any other alternatives?

Yes, and yes.

I have the Nikon version of the Sigma, and it's a great, fun lens.

That said, there's not a very big price differential between the Canon and the Sigma, and with only a small saving, the Canon would be the better purchase. In the Nikon world, the Nikkor equivalent is substantially more, making the decision-making a different process.

For indoor "occasions" none of these are what is needed. Rather, look towards the 24-70 lenses, or the kit or 50mm lens, both of which you already have.

These are, however, great lenses for landscape/outdoor use, and indoor roomscapes. They're often too wide to be used with the typical flash head too. Indoors, think tripod, full room, available dark.

And yes, distortions are a given. That's a part of the fun of these.

It may be worthwhile scanning the for sale section here, too. I think I may have seen somebody selling some Canon gear, including a 10-22, perhaps in just the last couple of daze. If you are unable to post in that section, PM.

Many months back I was facing the same choiceand ended up buying the Canon 10-22, it is simply awesome better range and fantastic colour, sharpness. It is and was worth the extra money build quality is great. Really regretted having to sell it as I moved up to a MK111 so had to replace it with a 17-40mm F4

well i realised that the sigma and canon are fairly similarly priced, so given that, i would choose the canon.

But for the tokina, it is f2.8 which would make it quite handy.... hmm choicesss

so, how do u know whether the tokina or sigma will work with EF or EFS mount equivalent cameras? just want to see if it is worth picking something which will work if i decide to go full frame such as the 5Dmk2

None of these lenses are designed to work on full frame...

Im pretty much deciding between the Sigma 10-20 and the Canon 10-22 now.

on average, the canon is around $400 more expensive, so now just trying to justify my decision.

any more input?

Well,

If you're thinking 5DII down the track, consider the Sigma 12-24 as it will give useful range on the 400d and still be usable on fullframe. Neither of the other two you are considering will do that.

There's some reviews of it on the FM Forums here (I'm sure there are others, google is your friend).

well. ive considered the full frame factor before too, but i doubt id get into it any time soon to be honest.

just dont have the cash for it.

the 12-24 looks nice, but its a 4.5-5.6 which is a bit slow and for the money id rather get the canon since they are so similar in price.

any places in sydney which may have a nice deal?
