BM-8 screen protector

I recently broke my D300 screen protector trying to get the damned thing off the screen. I have just investigated getting a new one via eBay and the genuine article....a few cms of Perspex...costs $24! Why does Nikon insult its customers with prices like this? It's clearly a rip off. They should be apologising for producing a cover that fits so tightly it snaps when you try and remove it quickly. The Chinese copy cost about $5....does anyone have any experience with the cheap copy?

Matt,

At $5, I'd buy four, and if there any issues, you still have spares that are ready to fly.

I can't see where any issues might arise though ... not in relation to something different from what you've just experienced, at any rate.

You must be but a whipper snapper Matt  Every single manufacturer charges like a wounded bull for spare parts, a classic example being printers. A poofter over $20 will get you the printer and the inks, a smidgin over $50.

This is a spare part world we all live in :P

Yes...I have snapped a few whips in my time....but it really offends me when a manufacturer insults my intelligence. It's almost enough to cause me to move to Canon!

It's because people will pay the price that they sell it for the price. And I have been guilty of paying over $20 for a Nikon lens cap - because I know the engineering on the lens cap is so much better than the copies! :D

I had my sister bring one back for me last time she was in New York. I love BH (but for a single item like that, the postage it not worth it). I would go genuine (as with lens caps -come to think of it I want to replace the ones for my Sigma (front and rear) and Tamron (rear) - stupid 3rd party lens caps)

Yes... when I did my B&H order back in August - I got a couple of genuine Nikon 77mm centre pinch lens caps to update my 28-70 and Sigma 10-20 to something more usable...... much handier, especially with a lens hood in place.

I would say GROUP BUY, but I am in a spot of debt at the moment so I cant afford even to buy a couple of front+rear caps and a optech strap, lets not mention the dodgy dollar at the moment.

Get clear adhesive for the LCD, like the kind used to protect cellphone screens or the now antiquidated PDA.

I lost the protector on my D70 very early on, and realised the stupid tax* Nikon had placed on getting a genuine replacement - and have had the same piece of clear protective film over the rear LCD for years. Scratch resistant, perfect optical clarity, and all for 99 cents.

(*only stupid people lose or break it).

Thanks Chi! That's exactly what I've done....although my screen is now protected against scratches I suspect the main purpose of the BM-8 is to protect the screen against breakage...IE..if the camera is dropped onto rocks or something similar. A broken screen would be an expensive repair methinks. So eventually I will get a replacement.

So true Matt. Drop your camera on rocks and the BM8 would be fine but the lens and body of the camera would be totally fecked

Camera usually drop front down if you have a lens mounted on it... It would cost from $150 to $15,000 to replace the damaged part

Why put a screen protector over the screen protector?
