Any members without DSLR?

PostPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2005 5:24 pm

Just wondering if there is anyone else in my situation in this forum.

I've only recently been looking into getting a dslr (hence found this forum), had a little interest a few years ago but technology was lacking and overpriced back then. Now the D70 seems to be a good camera that I can afford.

I'm still undecided as to whether I should spend all that money. The enthusiam shown by members is really persuasive but I probably won't have many opportunities to use it in the near future, then a new model is likely to come.

Even without a camera, and reading this forum, I think I've already contracted the dreaded "lens lust" disease. HELP!!!

Are you new to the field of SLRs in general?

Hi and welcome.

Unfortunately, this is something that is true of anything electronic that you might consider purchasing, be it a cellphone, tv, walkman, computer, or, yes, the humble DSLR.

You have to simply accept that no matter what it is that you buy, it's already out of date. The only decision becomes one of how much of an "out-of-date unit do I want to buy?" and the answer to that question will have some bearing on the price you might pay.

But, if you choose to play the "I'll wait till the next model comes out" game, you'll end up being stuck in that rut forever.

You simply need to decide which camera meets your needs at a given point in time, and move with that camera.

And just say piss off to the marketing dipsticks who'll tell you that the next camera will be bigger/smaller/better/faster etc. You simply do not need their so-called advice.

For most users, a D70 will be a fully functional, satisfactory, and serviceable unit for years to come, just like my 20 year old FE2.

Let me put this another way: what benefits do you believe you might get from the next model, whatever that might happen to be? What features on the D70 do you feel will not meet your current and future needs?

I could say that i am in a similar situation, as I don't have a DSLR at the present moment just a compact sony. I was about to take the plunge and get one, my wife was going to get it for me for my Birthday . But after reading this forum and seeing the prices that members can get, I decided to hold off on interest free and save up for a better deal when it comes along.

I'm still undecided as to whether I should spend all that money. The enthusiam shown by members is really persuasive but I probably won't have many opportunities to use it in the near future, then a new model is likely to come.

Why don't you think you have time to use it?, your too busy with the family or you work too much ?. If it's something you like to do. then you'll find time to do it.

As for technology moving forward great, i'm now hoping that if the Dx2 comes out and all those 8 megapixels start selling, and nobody is interested in the D70 cause it's only 6mp prices will start even falling even more so better deals can be had.

And when I buy one i'll be so comsumed in trying to learn all the features of the D70 and practising it will be a good entry level DSLR as it right now. Most people I see here have the D70 want a DX2..cool I say then lot of second hand ones will go on the market or they might just keep it as a secone camera. I'm just trying to upgrade from the compact to a real camera.

3 things holding me back at the moment is 1st money actually saving it all up. 2nd what Nikon are going to do once then release the DX2 not even sure if it's out as we speak but anyway and waiting for a ripper deal from Nikon itself or them slashing the prices to make way for the new DX2. 3rd reading some previous deals they were great wish i knew about this forum before last christmas :D

My wife works in the newpapers as well, so we both have and active interest, so it just goes hand in hand, and both of us need to learn the basics again even though we did photography back then sort of forget if you don't use it for a WHILE.

The D2x is in the difference league, won't affect the D70 in the market, perhaps it'll affect the D2Hs sale figures.
If there's anything out to replace the D70 in the near future so we can speak of then there's reduced price of the D70, but none in my sight for at least another 8-10months and then will be another 6 months will be available in the market as the D70 today.

Well i'm hoping maybe reducing it to compete with canon or something, who knows being wishful, but i'm hanging out for one of your great deals not import but from here :D

Nikon does not need to drop its price to compete with the "drebel", they're market winner in this level, and they're quite strong!
So, you can enjoying your waiting game, but it's a long way to see a new model release and get one in your hand in a real term.

Sort of, I did do a photography coarse in high school and so I pretty much know the theory, but photography is more practice than theory I guess. We only had fully manual camera and it was so annoying trying to remember and judge settings for the correct exposure. Since then I have used more automatic film slr's but basically only as point and shoot. I'd like to see what I can come up with when I take full control of the camera.

I was not sure if I should spend the money on a full DSLR. I decided against it and went with the Nikon CP5700, nice little camera but from the day I bought it I wished I had the full DSLR. As soon as the D70 came on the market I knew I had to get it.
I have had mine now for three months, once you get it you will not want to put it down... And if like me you are new to this forum ever second discussion makes you want to try somthing else, the problem becomes too many opportunities and not enough time!

Hi Gary,

This may not be true for cameras, but I have have had experience with computer equipment where if you spend money on features you hope to use in the future, you often find that when you do get around to using the feature it is obselete or there is a better product to do the job. So now I always say to myself: only get what you need when you need it.

So a the moment I am deciding if it is the right time or not. I'm not sure what I need either, I don't want to spend too much and find I don't like it that much.

tnzz,
Yes there're some other P&S in the market with lower price which may suitable and don't have lot of neccessary features that you may not need or use, go to the DSLR then you'll venture into the difference segment of photography. If you're thinking of easy going along with those camera, then the PHD mode will help.
Whatever you buy today, please don't look back, time changes all the time and technology also changes, so get what you need and buy what make you comfy.

Mal,
I also have acess to a CP5700. Did you take a lot of pictures before you got the D70? Are you taking more pictures now you have the D70? I currently don't use a camera very often, but have always thought photography would be fun to get into, never did much about it though.

Oh... pish posh... you make the time...

For instance, I've found that breathing takes too much time.

tznn, yeah I took heaps, with the CP5700! I had it for just over 12months.
But in the 3 months I have had the D70 I have taken more photos.
I take my D70 with me to work every day! I can't leave home without it!

Hi Birddog,

Maybe you misunderstood me, I want to move away from the P&S. If I buy a camera it will definitely be a DSLR. How did you first get interested in photography.

tnzz,
I used to fly and shoot photos from the cockpit once I was young 18YO in VN War. My dream was a War Correspondence, cos I ferried lot of them to the front during that era. It's 36 years now since I had my first camera once I was in Lackland AFB, TX for flight training, back in 1968.
